Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase?Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

They might be filtering your budget, I have been seeing that happen. They do it (I think) in an effort to not waste anyone's time. It might not hurt to go back and ask what the range is for the role.

Not anymore. Figure out how much money you need to live on and start from there.
I’ve had companies ask me to take a drug test before they interviewed me. That’s a new norm. What you do is you ask them what they’re looking to pay or you can look on Glassdoor for how much the company typically pays. You gotta figure out how much money you need to bring in every month to pay your bills. You can go from there.
OK, typically in a large company there are purchase orders in each department. They call them PO’s. Each department gets a budget. That budget includes how many people they anticipate hiring within their division. The budget is allocated. It is usually based quarterly. This is where you have to figure out when the quarter begins and ends within that company. The person that owns the PO can swap staffing with other PO’s if they figure out later that they might need more people or less. The people that handle the purchase orders have bonuses based on the amount of money that they have NOT used that quarter. Bottom Line is if they can utilize their own resources and not hire someone new, then they get a bigger bonus that quarter. What they don’t recognize is that their budget goes Down the next quarter if they don’t utilize all the money allocated to their PO. I’m hoping you understand that. If you can do more than one job, then you save them money and they get a bigger bonus. That’s how you get hired into a new company. The sad thing is that most managers don’t recognize that if they don’t use their proposed budget, then their budget goes down the next quarter. They are no longer important and cannot function efficiently. The money goes somewhere else.
