I'd say pretty much not negotiating would be my worst move.
Never say a number first. This can be really hard but throwing out a number - or worse, your current salary - is death to you, especially if you are underpaid. I was once stomach-achingly underpaid at a big holding company agency. When I made a lateral move to greener pastures I followed this rule and got a $50k bump which got me back on track salary-wise. It works!
👆how do you get them to say a number first? Any tips on how to steer that convo?
New Job? Add 20% when they ask your current salary. Then say "plus bonus 10% bonus" if you are director or above. Has always worked for me.
Always suggest there's a competing offer, or there may be one coming.
When negotiating, it's always better to say the first number, and make it 5% higher than you can imagine you would get. Let them have the last word. Settle quickly- Especially if it's more than 20% higher than current salary. They feel like they were in charge and will never know what hit them
Asking for a ridiculous amount from a startup
^(But that is not a negotiating tactic, that is putting in the long *smart* hours to be amazing at what you do, far out shining your peers.)
"In terms of compensation, can you give me a ballpark number for what your agency is offering?"
Leveraging a 219% salary increase and a promotion with another job offer.
Prove that you are worth the ridiculous amount by being willing to walk away from their quasi-ridiculous offer.
I second that. NEVER give a number first. And if the number they eventually come back with isn't quite there, ask for tons more vacation time.
I always mention the number I'm *looking for* in the new position, not my current salary. Of course this is like 10% over what glassdoor says I should be making
^New salary is 219% of previous. Didn't mean "on top of."
