Anything you’re paying for like the fourwall, color, graphics, whatever the post house is doing that you’re paying for, mark it up 20%. Back when I was staff rack rate at my shop was 4400/day for editor and room, with outside costs and markup on top of that. That’s not to say many (most?) jobs weren’t discounted from rate card but it gives you some perspective on how high your creative fee can go. You know your client best though, try not to scare them away. Hopefully the reason they work with you is they love working with you and not only the inherent value that a freelancer can bring.
I mean doesn’t hurt to ask right? But if they’re used to paying your day rate I’d err on the lower side. If they’re new to you and used to boutique rates… higher maybe. Can you tell I don’t want to be the one to lose you this gig? I guess only you know the agency and the client and the scope. Go with what feels comfortable.
I’ve had a 5K creative fee added on top of a day rate when 1x 30 was added to our slate on the same timeframe (i.e. the number of days didn’t increase). Is it common practice to bid one from the get go? Why not just set a higher rate?
Can someone explain the creative fee to me? Never heard of this.
