Are you really good at data analysis in Excel? If not, I’d start there. Great at building out the foundations of working with data and figuring out if analytics is something you’re actually good at/enjoy.
Otherwise I think your plan is good. You’ll need to put in some work in stats and machine learning before most formal DS roles. Formal education/certification will make it a lot easier to get in the door.
I come from the perspective of having 2 YOE as an operations analyst and pivoting to data science after a bootcamp program ~5 years ago. That worked out pretty well for me in terms of ROI. Master’s programs in data science were pretty rare back then, but the number of graduates from those programs seems to have grown significantly since.
It’s really tough because a Master’s degree is way more expensive, and so you take on a bigger risk if you end up struggling to find a job or don’t like the field. At the same time the number of people with formal training has grown to the point I’m pretty sure you’re at a competitive disadvantage just doing DIY study. May be possible if you try to pivot to a DS team internally at Deloitte. Otherwise it seems start-ups are more willing to go with someone from a bootcamp, while larger, more established companies look for advanced degrees.
I think you’re wise to try to get some more work experience before making any decisions. Learning more about programming/data visualization will definitely be helpful regardless of your future job title. Good luck!
You need to build experience. Once you have a data science job at last, it'll be easier
