Not excited by our bonus structure. Everything is dictated by billable hours and I’m just churning with no motivation.
Our firm is establishing our target billable %'s at a small public accounting firm. Is there a website that gives target billable time % by staff level for the tax and accounting industry? Just started poking around the AICPA website, but would appreciate being able to save some time looking for it. I'm used to a lower % rate than what's being proposed (70% vs 85%) and don't want to cause undue pressure on staff, but do want to give a reasonable billable hours expectation going forward.
My law firm gives me a report that breaks down the amount of billable hours collected compared to how much I’ve been paid on a monthly basis. Does anyone else’s firm do this? At what point do you think it’s acceptable to ask for a bonus/raise?
Hi ladies! Looking for insights on what’s it’s like working as an associate of some firms. Anyone here has worked/works at Fox Rothschild or McDermott and can give me some insights as to firm culture? Partners? Work life balance ? Billable requirements etc?
What's up everyone? I saw a salary survey posted earlier. What do y'all think I should make at a litigation boutique that handles primarily business litigation on a contingency fee? No billable hours.
How often does your billable time get written off? Does it affect your hours vis-a-vis meeting yearly requirements and bonus? Tips for minimizing write offs and partners who ask you not to bill time?
What does everyone have for billable hours?
Does anyone have experience working for a ALSP? How does compensation work (pay and benefits)? Are you an employee or technically an IC? Do you have billable requirements like at a firm? How do you think it prepared you to potentially move in house? I'm currently at a firm but thinking of taking a position with an ALSP but my goal is to go in house.
Smaller Firm Question - how long do you give associates to start making a profit (i.e. doing sufficient billable time that is collectible) before you begin with warnings or termination?
Scenario: 1 Senior associate transferred laterally but did not bring business (this was known), 1 Junior is 3 months in, but seems unable to bill even his own salary, no less enough to cover other overhead. I am billing more than both combined (both hours and $$) and it is driving me crazy.
Any thoughts on Maron Marval? Specifically their Texas office regarding workload, salary range and 1950 billable hours?
Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.
I am a 10 yr lawyer. 7 yrs in my practice area. Little over a year at current firm. Still an associate. Im at large plaintiff firm w/ billable requirements. I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.
How are y’all planning your consulting exit strategies? Do you have a specific role in mind to aim toward? Are you building specific skills outside of billable work?
The recent most billable hours post, inspired me. What is your longest billable day? Mine was 56 hours straight with no break—and the partner was more than a jerk when I was saying no more at the 30 hour point. That was two 24 hour billable days back to back on my time sheet and on the bill, a 360 hour month, and 650 aggregated for two months. And it is one reason (of so many reasons) why this job can suck so much! At least I got a good bonus...
16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.
Making hard push to go in-house with a startup, billable work has dried up.
Question: what’s a good salary for VP Mkt & Sales? And commission?
For the last four weeks or so of WFH I’ve been making it to my desk around 7:30/8am and working basically without a break—lunch at desk- but cannot maintain momentum past like 6:30/7:30pm. Most of the day is billable work, but I cannot bring myself to finish outstanding assignments after 8pm, but then feel so guilty when I’m not working past that time. Am I burnout or fucked up? (Also I hate this gig & am not in it for the long haul, just hate not turning things quickly)
The most important lesson from the Snyder-verse JUSTICE LEAGUE is the value of good editing.
How long does it usually take to hear back after an interview? Had first round interviews with 3 VPs last Wednesday and I still have not heard back from recruiter even after sending follow up email last Thursday
Anyone here in Cyber/privacy? Would love to connect. Am a JD in tax and interested in making the pivot.
I was wondering if I put down my resignation now. And in case after a few weeks I decide to stay back, can I withdraw my resignation?
Morning! Here it is… 🍼 and happy Easter everyone!! Get those lambs, rabbits, veal, Guinea pigs, goose, or whatever you eat in your culture and enjoy!
I have accepted tcs offer letter and have given tentative joining date on ibegin portal but the location and joining date has not been updated on the ibegin portal. Any information on how much time it will take.
Random confession. Why do most of the influencers brag they went thru depression, trauma, rockbottom etc., and they jumped back. Is it a rule of thumb for being a social media influencer ?
Thoughts on moving into more of a PMM role? I currently have 10 YOE of acquisition based marketing in financial products. I design, implement and track acquisition campaigns but I also work with our tech team and design new UX, acquisition channels and other enhancements. I have my hand in a lot of facets of our program! I’m looking towards fintechs for growth opportunities and it seems like most positions are posted at Product Marketing Managers. Would taking some specific certifications help?
I like the project I am on but I truly dislike the senior I work with. Never met such a condescending man in my life.
Alright question— I want to take the gmat/gre.. what are some tips or study guides anyone has used.
Thank you in advance
Is anyone working in DHL Asia Pacific Shared Services SDN Bhd? I am having some queries regarding the same.
Almost 4 weeks in and my status is still wrong. It was correct for the first ~1 day and then bumped down a level. Shouldn’t be hard as all my nights last year were SPG. This is ridiculous.
BE 👏🏼 LIKE 👏🏼 CHAD 👏🏼 HODL
I have been practicing family law for 7 years and made partner at my firm. But with Covid and some big (happy) life moments this past year I keep wondering if the stress is worth it and can feel myself burning out. Has anyone made a successful transition entirely out of family law? Is there anyway to go in house after practicing family law? I don’t want to do estate planning because I am not at all familiar with that area of law. Federal clerkship?
Additional Posts in Big Law
Is anyone genuinely happy at their Big Law firm? Obviously, comp is great and top level work, but is anyone considering sticking it out for the long run instead of lateraling to a smaller firm or going in-house? Looking for any details you want to share about your positive experience, what city your office is located in, name of firm and group (if you feel comfortable or approximate Am Law ranking), and why you want to stick it out.
Just started a few weeks ago. Is it weird if the people you work with don’t ask you anything about yourself or are generally aloof? Several of the people in my group don’t even get my name right. I get I’m brand new, but I just find that odd. Even when I worked in fast food people called me by my right name. When the group has had lunches, they mostly talk about affluent topics i.e. Rolex collections, test driving teslas, expensive sneakers/restaurants, etc. Is this typical of big law?
Any insight into the LA office of Mayer Brown?
The way firms throw wads of cash at attempts to impress associates then nickel and dime us on the small stuff makes no sense. Millions being spent on our upcoming retreat (which I'd rather not attend in the first place, but the constant messaging of "how much we're investing in this" and other pressures made me cave), but I have to pony up the difference between an aisle seat and a window seat to get there.
How about moving it to a Ramada and letting us all fly first class?
How long did your longest matter last? I imagine litigators take the cake here but curious about deals as well.
I need a financial advisor that’s not slimy/scammy. How do I find them? I have a diverse portfolio including PE and CRE, but have sucked at investing in stock while the Nasdaq blew through the roof 🤦♀️
People who’ve lateraled recently (i.e. within the last few weeks or month or two), how long did you take to clear conflicts? It’s been over 5 weeks and I’m getting nervous… 😬
Is there any advantage to applying to a firm directly versus with a recruiter? Doesn’t it save the firm money to hire someone without a recruiter?
What file management system does your firm use? Lateraled a few months ago and my new firm uses eDOCS which is a stinky piece of crap. I used to use Imanage, which I didn't think too much about, but it's so so much better in retrospect.
@Chicago : in town tomorrow for a conference in the PM. Arriving early and looking for a sweet restaurant to grab some drinks and food beforehand. Where would you go? (Ps: first time in Chicago)
Sent an email to the other side with our client CC’ed. client emails me back irate that I sent that email without his express authorization. He has a right to be mad as I was told to get confirmation from him before sending by the partner but I misunderstood and sent the email. Apologized to client and deal team. Deal team said it’s fine, just don’t repeat it. I feel terrible. 2nd year.
First year associate here. Does anyone know of a handy tool/website/software that allows you to easily track people’s availability for scheduling calls? I currently do it manually and it’s quite inefficient and sloppy.
Oddly specific but did anyone in the NY 2nd dept have to wait forever to get through C&F? I’ve been waiting almost 5 months. Maybe this is normal but the 1st dept seems to get people admitted much quicker.
2020 grad here. Worked at a firm and then clerked. Just started another clerkship and planning on returning to big law around this time next year. Thing is I’m certain I don’t want to litigate and want to do corporate. Has anyone done this?
My idea clients are people in large scale commercial real estate. Does anyone have any suggestions of ways to network to meet those types of individuals organically? Organizations to join or events to attend? Thanks!!
Word just crashed on me and I lost 2+ hours worth of edits 😩 IT checked and says it’s irrecoverable no better way to start the week..
