“Managing Associate” as a job title. What is it? (Besides the obvious). I’ve seen some Sidley associates with the title and didn’t know whether other firms were adopting the role as well and whether it was a merit-based thing or just a fake title to distinguish senior associates

It’s a shiny object to distract from reality. Yvette got some good press on it though.

likefunny

"Of counsel" means something, but no one is sure quite what.

funnylike

Honestly surprised how many people have fallen for it and started to use the title in their signatures…

like

It means nothing. Market scale. They also just lengthened time to partnership. Yvette is cunning as always. Don’t fall for it.

Associate means junior
Managing associate means midlevel
Senior managing associate means senior

Why are firms still referring 1st year's and 8th year's with the same title? Seems ridiculous because of the hierarchy, the roles, and experience differences. There is a reason why we distinguish Associates, from Of Counsel, and from Partner. We do that to show the role and experience of the attorney.

Why would you not do that with Associates? Especially, since your role is drastically different depending on your year.

smart

European firms have been using these and similar titles for years and the way to partnership being longer is only one of the reasons.

A couple of others: Our clients use similar titles and it is easier to convey that someone with a shiny title is in the lead on a project or is charged out at a certain rate. It is also a nice acknowledgment that the firm wants to keep and promote the person. In addition, free marketing every time someone updates their LinkedIn (mutual appreciation society).

Personally, when my title changed I noticed that there was not that much of a dance to convince a counterparty (counsel or business) to take what I said seriously.

Hi Fishes,

I am looking for the job change in ServiceNow profile and having a experience of 4+ yrs.

Currently I am trying to create network in linked in and naukari but still not getting the response from some companies like JP Morgan or mindtree etc.

Can u help me to understand what is the best way to create a network to some major companies.

I know applying directly to the company site mostly doesn't have any benefit or will take long time to schedule the interview.

If you start as a Program Manager, how/when do you begin to advise people as a people lead? I’ve heard Program Managers are not people leads. I started lead a team of 3 about a month ago at my current job and don’t want to lose leadership experience but have been told my YOE would map to a Program Manager level at Google.

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!
