Meeting with my career coach on Wednesday as a follow up to the annual review for everyone in the audit department.

Is it worth bringing up my salary to them since I’m quite underpaid going into my second year as manager given the market I’m in? Moreover, should I let him know I’ve been talking with competing firms/industry companies that have been willing to offer me $90k as base (as compared to my mid-70s salary at the moment)?

I would not mention what is being discussed elsewhere unless they specifically ask. If you're bluffing, mention $100k. 90k still sounds low for M2.

like

It’s a semi-bluff. Wouldn’t want to leave the firm, as I have a really steady situation here with decent WLB (55 hours a week during the peak of busy season, with 40-45 being the expectation in the offseason) and have “proved myself” to the partner group.

At my old firm, I’d fit right back in like a glove, but I wouldn’t really enjoy the clientele, nor the commute (as opposed to working from home 3 days a week).

I just can’t justify this pay I’m getting for much longer though.

like

I wouldn’t even discuss, I would just take the 90k and walk. That’s ridiculously low

Is London salaries low or somethIng??

Yes I would bring it up, but are they the right person to talk to about any salary changes? I talked with my partner in charge and tax department head, but they have an open door policy. We discussed and I told them that I spoke with other firms and I was making $70k and local market was at least $75k and California 100% remote tax positions were paying $85k+, they thought they were market rate so they didn’t budge. I quit since annual raises were 5% and promotion raises were 10%. It would take a while for to get even close to the numbers that were presented to me from other firms. The loyalty “penalty” or “free agent premium” is a huge problem in PA and it makes more financial sense to switch firms.

like

In my experience it always better to come to the table with another offer at hand, unless this is a coach that you really trust

like

You should be asking minimum 95k… and a big bonus to make up for the low pay!

like

Have you gotten an offer anywhere else?

I’m an A3 at $85k HCOL. Time to leave

I don't trust any career coach that was arbitrarily assigned. Also not sure if they have any sway in comp. I would just go to the partner for comp discussion

Definitely ask, and if the reply is "we'll get back to you" or "no," seriously consider the other offers, and let the next conversation be a resignation. No need to twist arms at this time by mentioning what other places are offering, they can find out for themselves before or after you leave. Also, counteroffers are often a temporary delay until you're replaced w/ a cheaper worker. Firm partners always take care of themselves, you do the same here.

@AS1: I’m already seriously considering the other offers, because I doubt these guys are going to bump me from the mid-70s to even $85k (which I would consider from them as a hometown discount).

Will definitely bring it up next time I get to meet with the PIC and department head at my office as they seem to have more sway than my coach who is a newer partner in the department.

I was once at a dinner with a second year analyst, consultant, and partner, and the analyst said he planned on retiring by 30 and the partner and consultant laughed. Little did they know, the analyst owned his own home and rented all the rooms out so he payed no rent, never ate out, only grocery shopped, and very very rarely bought anything new. He saved most of his income, and was perfectly content with just his video games. That man was serious about not being stuck working forever.
