Get a personal trainer, exercise and get in the best shape of your life. Set inspirational goals - e.g., >15% body fat and set up a photoshoot where you pose like a fitness model so you can show off to your family (and close friends) how hard you worked.
No other professional wins ever came even close to this greatest feeling of achievement and pride.
The photo shoot I mentioned was a goal-setting tool. Nothing more, nothing less. It gave me a fixed deadline that forced me to train daily, and follow a strict diet.
You are fixating on the word “show-off” I clarified that may not have been the right choice of wording. I don’t post those photos on social media, I don’t go around telling my neighbors how great I looked.
What I meant is this can be used as a motivational mechanism—a tangible reminder of the work put in, and perhaps something you choose to share with close family or friends. What anyone does with that is entirely their own decision. And how anyone feels about this is their own feelings which I couldn’t care less about but it worked for me.
No recommendations. Just think it’s an awesome opportunity for you, and especially to devote time to kids and self. Enjoy
Get fit and learn a real instrument like the saxophone. Read 2 books a week but curate the books/order for the 3 months. Take your kids to and pick them up from school every day.
Ignore the sax player - definitely return to the piano.
Invest in a good teacher so you get a solid technical foundation returning to the instrument.
Throw in a few jigsaw puzzles. They sell this felt mat that you can put it on and roll it up when not working on it so the kiddos don’t wreck it. It’s incredibly cathartic to watch it come together and then be truly, and completely “done” at the end.
Focus on your health first, your family second, and travel third. I have done none of this and it is my biggest regret.
In addition to the fitness and book recommendations, I'd add a hobby such as wood working or volunteering. Creation of physical objects has a uniquely satisfying "I did that" feeling. Giving to others your time and effort can also provide deeper satisfaction. Good luck!
Learn a language or brush up on a language you have neglected. Set a goal to read enriching books. Maybe invest in a couple of good trade mags.
Read a few great books. Do some DIY around the house. You’ll feel super accomplished.
Volunteer at SPCA if you like animals. Very fulfilling
Starting strength / Greyskull LP. Reconnect with the physical world. Easy to start and make rapid progress.
Take cooking classes and cook some awesome new dishes or cuisines for your family
I second volunteering. Not many get to experience life the way we do and it is important to give back. Going beyond monetary giving keeps us grounded and hopefully expands our desire to help others more consistently.
I'll wager you get a better sense of fulfillment from this than any 'photoshoot.' 😆
These are all brilliant suggestions, thank you to all that have posted (so far). Am a fairly serious marathon runner already so that category will remain ticked, but the jigsaws, woodworking and volunteering (along with picking up the kids which was already the plan) are awesome ideas.
I’ll continue to add in volunteering and actively participating in a charity/non-profit that aligns with your altruistic passions. I’m on the board for a large non-profit and it gives me fuel when I’m down about work or family.
