Hey ,
250k is a crazy good salary!
You are definitely able to live a good life on that even with 4 kids and a wife.
maybe The beginning will be a bit much ( buying school stuff, furnishing your place ect ) .
I’d say rent a place not straight up in the middle of the city , because rent here is ridiculous. Look somewhere around ”epping “ maybe .
Not if you want to live in the eastern suburbs (e.g. Bondi), inner west (e.g. Marrickville), or northern beaches (e.g. Manly). There are areas of Sydney where that is a great salary, but the foreigner dream of Sydney (aka by the beaches) is not affordable on that salary for a family of 4.
Also, if you are coming on a skilled worker visa, there’s a lot of extra costs vs. a PR visa. NSW charges ~$6-7k per student for a year of public school. Private is $40k+ per student per year. You’ll need private health insurance to access the health system ($600+ per month; you’ll want a high enough level anyways to avoid the paying the Medicare Levy Tax for high earners). You won’t be able to buy property, and loans for things like a car can be more difficult to get. (According to the internet, you’ll need $45k+ to purchase a new car outright, or $25k+ for a used car.)
I’ve been chatting with an MBA classmate pondering a move to Sydney from Singapore, and I think $400k is their absolute minimum salary to afford a similar quality of life to what they have in Singapore/want in Sydney (aka inner suburbs, private school, etc.). They do have the benefit of being citizens, so aren’t dealing with extra expat costs.
You said family of 4 with a non-working spouse in your post…
Childcare costs and domestic help costs will be through the roof compared to Singapore. Our childcare costs are $40k per year for 1 child in daycare.
Melbourne is still a high cost-of-living. The difference is that the city isn’t landlocked like Sydney is with the mountains, so you can still find cheaper housing as the city grows north, east, and west. That cheaper housing comes at the cost of a really long commute.
Anyone?
