Minimums don’t tell the story as much as averages. My firm minimum is 1900, but everyone is billing 2100 minimum more than likely
It is only 30 minutes less a day, but I feel like 8 hours a day is that “tipping point” between sustainable and burnout. I was in the exact same situation re billables and I felt like being able to leave at 6 v 6:30 made a huge difference
Agree. I can do 9 and 10 hour days, and it doesn’t seem like it should make much of a difference, but it so does.
Pro
I would prefer to have a lower minimum so that anything above factors into bonus rather than having to average 171 hours a month before bonus eligibility.
My firm’s target is 2000 but I routinely bill 2200-2300 and this past year I billed almost 3000 (but that’s bc M&A has been insane this past year)
Yeah that cannot be healthy. I would lose my mind billing those kinds of hours. Even at ~200 a month I start to lose it a bit. Maybe I’m just not cut out for it. My body starts to actually degrade around that point, like I told my husband I’m for sure causing my body physical harm when I work too much. I’ve always been interested in M&A work though - I feel like I’d be good at that kind of stuff.

Practice area makes a big difference. In litigation, it's hard enough to make a 2000 per year target. I would not agree to anything higher. But in certain other practice areas, you'll probably still exceed 2100 even though the target is lower.
You need to know more info about both. Is it a “requirement” or a “target”? In other words if you don’t hit it, what happens? Nothing? Put on probation? No bonus? Also which firms likely work load will make it easier to achieve this. Can you likely bill more hours more easier at one or the other? For example, if you know one has clients who will pay for anything and not nit pick your time and you can put tons of yours working their cases.
