My wife started as an M at Accenture earlier this year coming from industry. I’ve never worked at Accenture or any b4, but I had to explain to her how up or out works. She also didn’t know that she came in with 24 months at level and what that meant. Really surprised none of this was communicated during hiring or by her manager.
Finally found THE one, after over a year of searching and trying out at least 5 different ones!
A nice comfortable office chair.
https://ergochair.co/collections/chairs/products/ergonomics-mesh-chair-w-adjustable-headrest-and-armrest?variant=32511617597491
My criteria: mesh seat and back, arms, headrest
I tried cheap ones from Amazon. Expensive, second hand gaming chairs. Tried HM Aeron (second hand) and while I didn't like the bulk and the general design, I was sold on the mesh seating. I wanted to get the ErgoChair 2 from autonomous, but it doesn't have mesh seat.
AMA.

My dad went through this (fired after 17 years at same company with little warning) - ended up finding it difficult to get another role in his field at his age, and decided to get a real estate license and begin working in real estate. He makes his own hours and is excelling now, with much better work / life balance than he’s ever had. He was devastated when it happened, but two years later he is thriving and really believes he’s in a better place than he was two years ago. Keeping my fingers crossed for your dad and sending good vibes your way
My dad did the same! After being fired so close to retirement, found a second career in real estate and is happier than ever. Congrats to your dad P2!
Find an employment attorney to discuss the situation with and to review the severance agreement before he signs it!
If he thinks it is age related also talk to a civil rights attorney
assuming possible discrimination, start with employment attorney asap. most will take initial screening call at no charge. also tell him get a notebook and write down every single thing he can remember that seemed odd. if truly age discrimination, will need evidence, statements, emails etc. if no access to email then at minimum recalling who from in case subpoena can be issued. if still has access to emails, send all possible evidence emails to personal email asap.
File a complaint with the labor department: age discrimination
This happened to my Dad too and he has struggled to find a job because of ageism in the workplace. No one wants to hire someone less than 5 years away from retirement apparently, even in a boom economy. He finally gave up after about a year and has been working at Home Depot. It’s been hard to watch because he’s talented and good at his job, but no one wants to hire a 62 year old.
Same story with my dad - struggled for a while, Home Depot while still holding out hope, then he accepted that the continued search wasn’t worth it anymore and formally retired. Hard to see so many of these stories here
How close to retiring? I ask because it affects my advice. Also, are you asking for advice for him, or advice for you on what to say to him?
Happened to my dad ... same company for 20 years and let go 2 years before retirement because new management wanted to cut costs. I just let him know I was sorry but didn’t talk about it too much with him because he is not a “talking about feelings” person. Thankfully he had six months severance and found a new job relatively quickly, even though it wasn’t ideal. I don’t think he would have asked for financial help even if he needed it, but since then my siblings and I have started to pay for a lot more trips and helped with some extra expenses to keep the pressure off.
My dad was over the moon when he got made redundant.
He was 2 years off retirement, got 1.5 years severance so decided to retire a bit early.
What was his fireable offense?
My mom had to dismantle the company that she spent her entire career building (after partners voted to retire and shutdown even though business was still profitable) only 3 years before retirement and is now still looking for work 2 years later. She doesn’t want to retire but is struggling to find a job with her skill set and experience. It’s tough. Needing to find a job in the last 5-10 seems really rough
Firings don't come out of nowhere, but a layoff can
Is there any more context?
No they don't, if you don't know what you're talking about you should leave the conversation
there is actually a lot of good insight on reddit about this. search r/internetparents and r/careerguidance
Was in a similar situation. As difficult and emotional of a time it is for him / the family, take the time to thoroughly read the termination contract / severance package. Also give him a few days to just digest it, then help him move on / find the next thing.
Tell him to look at contract opportunities, still a way to make decent money with some extra hours/location flexibility in an environment that isn’t as openly age biased
