I would ask HR discretely what options there are for this person to take short term disability or something so they feel supported and not stretched. And then maybe you can get proper help.

Coming from the other side of it, my team is super understanding that we all have “things” going on in life. I need to take time off for health reasons every week, but they get it, and we work around it. I’m contactable mostly but if not, they don’t flip out… sometimes I’m a text away or can check emails and teams. I guess it’s hard to find the line between trusting they actually are unwell or taking advantage. Check if they can be contacted and if you or HR can help. I’ve also worked with people who seemed to have been taking the piss with taking off full days for PT nearly every week and they didn’t last long.
Speak with your boss and see if they can allocate some help/resources to you when your direct report is not available.
That would be helpful. Unfortunately on the other end of the spectrum my boss is wildly absent and unresponsive with me.
