Hi there, I have 3.5 YOE working for NHS Finance. I applied to Deloitte Risk Advisory, Public Sector (London, UK) and was successful. Waiting to hear back with package offer but it’s been over 2 weeks - was told they may offer M2 grade, any ideas what this is?
I’m also interviewing for Senior consultant role also at Deloitte. How much would this typically pay?
Torn whether to stay within NHS as I will be getting an internal promotion or move to Deloitte.
What’s the WLB like? Good job security?

Having worked at firms with billable hour requirements and currently working at a firm without any, my view is that not having a billable hour requirement is miles better than having one. It just makes for a better working environment with your colleagues and your superiors; no incentives to hoard work, no one talks about them that much. It’s just…pleasant.
Sounds awesome! You can just focus on what’s important - the work.
Went from a firm with a billable billable hour requirement to one with none and it’s a million times better not having one in my opinion. When it’s not too busy you can just relax. Also at my last firm you could go through periods that were absolute HELL and still not get a bonus bc you weren’t busy at other times. Nice knowing your getting a bonus no matter what.
My firm has a 2k target for bonus - i had a horrible 1h last year and then took 2 weeks off and easy from there and came in at 1950 and lost out on 65k. Sucks!
My firm does not have billable hour requirements so there is no padding and people just do the work. So much better.
Yes actually.
Not having billables means you’re not subject to hard but objective and known target that can be planned for. In most case you’re then appraised against how everyone else is doing which is (a) usually unknown and (b) ever changing.
I have that in place here in Florida. My issue is I cannot find high quality talent.
Oh also, billable requirements can also result in discriminatory treatment. Due to a glitch when transitioning the time system at my last firm I found out the men in my group had been consistently meeting bonus requirements whereas the women were not, despite being told no one in our group typically got bonuses. This was to the tune of about a 500 billable hours per year discrepancy. Guess who also was routinely assigned most of the non billable assignments so wasn’t actually working that much less.
What kind of firms have no billable hours? Plaintiff with only contingency fees? Please enlighten me I hate billables
I actually completely disagree (much to my own surprise!) Was at a non-billable firm and now am at a billable firm and I’d much rather have clear objectives than obscure metrics. Also had much less leeway to turn down work at my non-billable
Billables always worse if you’re good at your job; none is worse if you’re a bit crap and want to rely on doing lots-of-crappy work…
I think if there are billable targets and you hit them (even if your product etc isn’t that great) then the argument for getting a bonus becomes stronger - and, in some cases or years, might even be automatic. If there’s no minimum, it’s harder to rely on that piece (unless you’ve billed 3000 or whatever, in which case you’re probably getting recognised for working hard either way).
I hate billable hrs too. I worked at law firm where billable hours was only used for a estate matters that were complex, but most of the other work was a flat fee. I preferred that much better than having the experience of having billable hours at a law firm. I just think it’s a miserable experience.

I don’t have a BH req at my firm, but I’ve been billing on avg 180-210 per hour. Almost wish I had a BH req so that I could cash in a bonus.
