Theres one of two things happening. First is you're not doing it how they want, forcing them to redo it. In this situation get feedback before and after the project and ask for examples of what they are looking for. Second is they are just miserable people. A third less likely situation is its a one off project and they have no idea what they want until they start reviewing it.
You don't. This is most likely a manager problem, not a you problem. Some people cannot ever loosen their grip on the reins. If that's your boss, your choice is to either accept it and stagnate, or move on.
Do you know what their preferred method of communication is? Try your best to update them often and maybe that will help you adjust what you’re doing.
