My recruiter said I should wear a tie to an upcoming interview. It feels kinda weird especially since I live in an extremely hot city. Is it necessary to wear one?

I usually try to match the attire or slightly elevate the attire from what is expected if I worked at the place. That said, if this recruiter is good at their job, then I’d wear the tie because they should know the company and share that intel with you to give you an edge. Also, there’s nothing really wrong with being a little over dressed for an interview. But at the same time if it’s going to bother you and the company is more business casual, I’d probably skip it.

It is always good practice to ignore the recommendations of recruiters. They only want you to fail and not get the job so they can perpetually look for new candidates and impress their own managers.

Depends who you are interviewing with. If they generally wear suits/ties, you should also.

like

Are people really not going to interviews in suits and ties anymore?

like

I don’t want to work somewhere that values how I tie my tie and rock a suit jacket over my hard skills and personality.

Wear a suit but no tie. And unbutton the top button. You’re a step above what they’re wearing but not excessively.

Alternatively you can wear a tie but no suit. But the former looks better in my opinion.

like

I agree. I would not assume a suit and tie would be overdressed.

like

While you don't HAVE to wear a suit and tie, I'd prefer to do all I can to make a lasting impression on everyone. If all of the other candidates have exactly the same skills as you, I'd hope that the little extra effort I made in appearance might separate me apart from them. Just food for thought.

like

Unless you are wearing a tux, no one is going to fault you for being overdressed. But on the other hand, certainly there will be some picky a-hole type who will say “no, he couldn’t be bothered to put on a tie, he doesn’t know how to dress and act in a professional environment, or he just doesn’t care. Let’s go with the other candidate.”

Some things in this life are just standard norms/expectations and don't warrant any other thought or consideration beyond absolute compliance...wear a suit and tie, man.

Better to be overdressed than underdressed.

I’ve always worn a suit and tie to interviews unless specifically told not to.

like

I went in a suit and tie. I was wildly overdressed and a sport jacket and slacks would have sufficed.

It’s hard to believe this is even a question. On the off chance that you could be interviewed by a person over 50, you definitely need to dress business attire, which means a suit and tie. Even if the recruiter told you it’s optional, you should still dress as if you really want the job.

It won’t kill you to wear a suit and tie and will guarantee that you are creating a positive first impression. If you get the job you may never have to suit up ever again but I’d you don’t dress with the proper respect you may never get a chance to find out.

I say all this as a person who hopes not to wear a suit ever again.

You should always do that. It’s important to do everything possible to make the best impression. Seems like a very basic thing to wear a suit and tie to an interview for a professional position.

I think you should listen to the recruiter if you want to secure the job. This recruiter is trying to help you.

Everyone wear suits and tie for interview when I interview them. If it is hot, show up a few minutes early to put on the tie and take it off when you leave the building.

on the way to an interview this morning eating a sandwich. I walked past a homeless man who had a stray cat perched on his lap. He asked for a bite of sandwich to feed them both as they hadn’t eaten in days. I gave the whole sandwich over and headed off to the interview. As I got to the interview room there was a large executive chair facing away from me. The chair turned and on top was a mirror. When looking in the mirror I could see the cat. I am the cat.
