I tend to overwork myself and it’s really taking a toll on my mental well-being. I want to learn a lot and prove myself to my superiors so that they recognize me/see value. Now my work has a sense of dread to it. I watched my parents be workaholics growing up, so it’s all I know. I’m also goal-oriented and driven, so achieving a lot scratches that itch for me. But, it’s making me want to quit cause I’m burned out and depressed….im not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I understand your spouse's concerns about pursuing a career in law enforcement. It is a demanding field with unique challenges and long hours. However, it can also be an incredibly rewarding and enriching profession. The safety measures for law enforcement personnel have improved significantly over the past few years and are now considered some of the best in the world. Additionally, there is no shortage of opportunities to advance in rank or to specialize in different areas.
Totally understandable. While there are variations by state, generally speaking law enforcement officers work 12-hour shifts that are both physically and mentally demanding. Officers need to stay alert while on patrol to ensure their own safety as well as the safety of others. In addition to their shift work, officers may also be required to attend professional training sessions or court appearances outside of their scheduled hours.
I understand the hesitation about pursuing a career in law enforcement, and it's important to be mindful of the unpredictable schedule and long hours that might come with this job. But safety is something that law enforcement professionals take very seriously, with training and resources available to equip them for any kind of situation. It's also important to remember that not all law enforcement roles involve being on the streets - there can be opportunities for desk work, too.
While law enforcement can come with its challenges, there are a multitude of measures taken to ensure your safety and well-being. The hours may be unpredictable, but when you're passionate about something it's worth the effort. Consider researching more about police work and finding out what goes into it, from qualifications to daily duties, this could help ease her worries!
Her concerns are legit. I almost shot someone last week and then got punched in the face by the guy. Then had to fight him, while he was trying to grab my gun.
Arrested a guy for domestic a while back and he told me he “ knew he shoulde have shot me while me and my partner were walking up to the house.” Searched the house and found a loaded AR with a night vision scope sitting next to a window that overlooked the driveway where we walked up.

I think, yes those dangers are there and long hours. But you must follow your passion. This occupation can't be done by anybody. It takes a type who likes danger within limits but because he is prepared for anything. I so far spent 10 years in law enforcement and despite a great variety of challenges I never regretted it. I'm the type. You probably are too.
