New-ish/Jr Attorneys (1-5 years experience) What are the top perks you want to see in a law firm when you’re job hunting? What is your minimum base pay? What doesn’t matter to you but maybe the employer thinks it does? What are your dealbreakers?

We are having trouble filling this role for a new associate and want to find out why. Perhaps it’s the posting wording. We feel our benefits and comp package is very competitive, but maybe it’s not.

#1 priority is salary + hours. “Salary” includes realistic bonuses without working like a dog.

If you’re an insurance defense firm offering $120k and demanding 2,000 hours…those are not enticing anymore. I think people nowadays realize how dumpy it is to work the same hours as Big Law and get paid half. So if you’re not offering big money, you gotta lower your ask.

#2 is WFH flexibility. Only make employees come in if actually necessary to perform their tasks. Not for “work culture.”

Would need more info. Location? Comp? What are the benefits? Offering hybrid/remote?

I agree with the comments above. I would add autonomy but with support. Let people do the job without micromanaging, yet give them support an ear to listen when they have a question or issue they haven’t encountered.

like

Also - don’t put a word in the job posting about how you are a “family” or have some amazing work culture. That’s not believable for a second and sends the exact opposite message - that you will work me like a dog and give me tiny treats.

Need a sanity check here.

When I joined my current company, we were on a quarterly bonus structure with guaranteed payouts each quarter. This was, in fact, how the recruiter said he could meet my salary request.

The company just announced we are moving to annual payouts only, with no payments for 2023 until May 2024. There are no raises happening.

This amounts to 12% less money in my pocket in 2023 plus inflation.

Is this standard, or should I be looking for opportunities elsewhere?

Hi everyone - I'm contemplating an offer from a large PI firm. I'm a little more than halfway through completing my 2nd year of practice, and I'm currently at a small firm with a low salary that's just no longer cutting it.

The offer from the large firm is for a pre-suit position, base salary of $100K - is this salary pretty standard for this kind of position?

Any insight is appreciated, thank you!!

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??
