Director in industry is not the same as Director in consulting- don’t fool yourself
An offer/opportunity for Director.*
OP - In that case, I'd push for promo. You'll never feel 100% ready and that first year will be difficult. If your not ready or your group doesn't have the business case, you won't be promoted - get the balling rolling as it can take more than 1 year depending on circumstances
Yes! Best lessons come from failure. I can't think of a single person I know in a high level position that hasn't failed at something
This is a great question
I feel like only EY1 answered my question. For the two actual directors that posted, any thoughts?
I disagree with the premise that your job title determines your growth. There are many Managers who operate at the Director level. If being a consulting Director is what you want, leaving when you know you aren’t ready is not the answer.
Op - is your alternative D offer in industry or at another Big 4? If industry it will not help. If with another B4 I would personally not switch if I didn't feel fully ready for D. With the sales and managed revenue targets Ds are on the hook for, I would not want to be starting fresh at a new firm, needing a new network, and needing new clients while trying to meet these new objectives of a D. Hard enough with the built in support you've developed at PwC working your way up to a top tier manager
Agree with P3
I'm in a v similar position. Manager since 2013 and leading key client relationships and delivery, contributing to team growth etc, but I don't have all the axes on the snapshot at next level - if you want to think about it that way. I think that will come from being in-store. Im going to see out the year and see how it goes, if no promo then I'll probably start looking
I’m in the same boat exactly. I’m considering Director positions in industry, can’t gain what you don’t try
Agree D1. If you want to be a D in consulting taking an industry D position will not help. Arguably the inverse is true as well, many consulting D level skill sets aren't directly applicable to industry
Not leaving per se. I was trying to say progressing. Either by pushing for a promotion or lateraling to another firm.
