I would not ask anything of the old family friend. But I would mention i was interviewing with the person in passing. But with zero requests made. If he puts in a good word great. If not fine. But I wouldn’t ask.
Just let him know you’re interviewing there and that you’re excited
Ask the family friend for advice on the agency/brand/person you're interviewing. By seeking insight on what you can do to do well, that person will decide how they should contribute
This is what I went with. Asked if he has any advice/info that I might endear me to the guy, but stayed far away from asking for any help.

Eh, I always feel weird when someone brings up a person connection that’s not a business connection. If you worked with the family friend, go for it. But if he can’t vouch for you on a business level, I say leave it alone.
This industry is built on nepotism. Go for it! 👌🏾
Consider this: if the family friend is a heavyweight,
s/he is probably proud of their well-earned status and they might feel slighted to hear you DIDN’T reach out. People like to help, and they love being asked for their opinion. If you’re prudent about your inquiry, which it sounds like you were, then all should go well.
This has happened to me. I dropped a line after the interview to my ‘heavyweight’ in hopes they already liked me/her reaching out to them could sweeten the deal. Before feels desperate. After seems smarter to me? Anyway, worked out. Got the gig and over ask.
Thanks for the advice, everyone! This community is the best!
Let us know how it turns out!
Of course you should
100%. If people tell you no, they don't get it. If people make fun of me for saying so, they really don't get it.
Do you ever want to feel like you earned it?
Building a network of connections who can provide referrals/references is a huge part of why we all network throughout our entire careers. Absolutely use the reference
Depends on the nature of the connection. I'd agree with consultant 1 unless they're at the same shop.
This industry is made on doing just that. Absolutely reach out.
Duh
Absolutely
Let him know you’re interviewing. Don’t make any requests. Maybe ask him an intelligent question? The fact he’s respected and senior will almost certainly work in your favor.
I’m here for all these nuances in terms of how to leverage 👍🏼
Think talent over privilege. You want that job based on talent.
