I am absolutely! I graduated in 2017 and have not had an attorney job since. I’ve been a law clerk for one place for less than a year, and I had a stint as a cashier at Walmart before that. Currently between jobs trying to get contract and remote doc review but no luck. I’m not sure what to think anymore, I’ve lost track of how long I’ve been unemployed this time around, May 2019 or something like that. Maybe some of us are just bound to fail because statistics?
I went to law school to become an entertainment lawyer (worked at a record label pre-law school) and graduated in 2009. There were no jobs. I worked at an entertainment boutique for a hot minute after graduation making a lawyer salary less than what I was getting paid as an admin at the record label. Eventually I had to cut my losses and expand into non-entertainment work. It's not what I wanted for my career but I can at least pay my loans back.
What do you do now? How long did it take you to make the transition?
I’ve had a similar experience and I know how tough the constant rejection can be. I graduated and passed the bar in 2019 and I’ve been working as a law clerk at a production company ever since. I’ve been applying for attorney positions for the last year and been on numerous interviews but nothing seems to stick. I’ve had some luck doing some freelance entertainment legal work through my network but nothing permanent. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!
Thank you so much, and good luck to you as well!
I went to law school thinking I was going to practice entertainment law. It’s a tough field to get into, lots attracted to the sexiness of it. My suggestion, start an LLC for yourself and get immersed in your local art scene. Hand out your card and work for low hourly rates and flat fees. Become an artists’ attorney to keep yourself sharp and involved in the actual issues. Who knows, maybe that local band you reviewed a few venue agreements for will be the next big thing... plus, it’s doing a huge service for the arts community. I did this for three year while waiting tables. It was the best decision I made, I was always networking with the IP and Entertainment Section of the bar bc I was pushing for arts representation. I became known in the arts community and in never had a gap on my resume. I practice in tech now (the Ip and contract skills translates easily), but some day, maybe I can break into entertainment again.
