Outside of base salary, what are the different forms of compensation one can expect to encounter when looking to go in-house? To what extent are these negotiable in a Fortune 500 company? Which forms are worth negotiating, and which (if any) should one be skeptical of?

Focus on the base! Everything else will come with good performance and time, but you'll have to fight tooth and nail to get meaningful base increases. Also, lots of times, the other stuff is a function of your base, so more base will inadvertently increase your bonuses and equity.

like

Signing bonus, equity grants, RSUs, annual bonus. It's all negotiable.

Vacation. Everything is negotiable within the level you are slotted at. If you are a counsel or senior counsel, those targets for comp are different. Then they may have counsel levels a, b, c…. Or 1,2,3 based on years of experience or skill set. It’s their problem not yours but you have to convince them that you deserve higher.

like

Usually non-negotiable: PTO, health insurance, 401K (match)

like

Bigger companies tend to have set rules on what and how much you get. They may be not very negotiable at all - but that’s a much bigger issue after you’re in the door. Generally comp is Base (salary), short term incentive (annual bonus) plus long term incentives (restricted stock, bonus and maybe performance units). We have specific written guidance for what you get depending on your pay grade.

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.

I know I would benifit from some ADHD medication but my Dr won’t prescribe any with my history of BP (controlled with BP meds). Anyone else gone through this? Any tips?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

If you practice collections in-house, what do you earn and do you receive a bonus?

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. As the only attorney, I oversee all statewide collections efforts, from demand letter to garnishment, with a case volume of nearly 7k new cases per year, of which the majority I end up litigating. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.
