Tell them thanks but that it doesn’t sound like something that lines up with your career goals; you were hoping to work on XYZ. Offer them the name of someone else who might be interested/unstaffed.
Not sure why people over complicate these things.
Some staff Aug gigs are great, I loved my 9 months in analytics at a tech company, learned much more than most assignments and got to know people really well. Definitely made me more comfortable working with senior clients as I was there long enough to see how the sausage is made from their own perspective. See if there are any perks to it. Separately I'm a firm believer in telling the story of what you want no matter what. So If you want X but are offered Y tell them you are happy to take the assignment but want help getting to X. If they don't come through, quit and go do what you actually want somewhere else. If you aren't willing to quit they will never take you seriously.
I would also generally suggest a mix of both short and long term projects when at lower levels as you’ll learn different skills from each, which will better help you prepare for later promotions into management. As noted above, staff augs can actually be great but you need to understand what they require. A staff aug role that I was fearing as a Senior Associate turned out to be great and helped me build client relationships that have resulted in millions of sales for me and was the cornerstone of my director promotion case.
Maybe it doesn't align with your career plan...
Depends on the partner.. and how much of a career limiting choice it would be.
