Not a partner who lateralled, but I’ve been involved with lateral partner recruiting. The process is more involved with more rounds. They’ll meet with partners in the group, other partners din the office, and firm leadership. May also meet with counsel/associates. They also have to submit an LPQ, which seems to take a long time to fill out, but is used to show their book of business.

LPQ = Lateral Partner Questionnaire in case anyone was wondering.

Partners changing firms is much more intense than any associate lateraling.

Not a partner but I am friends with a lot of them and know how it works.

Per other comments, the partner process is much longer and more burdensome. There are a number of rounds and diligence that includes an LPQ. It can take time to schedule meetings with decision makers across the firm and LPQs can take forever to turn in.
Way more rounds. At certain top firms a P candidate will have to meet 25- 30 partners.

Yes, the memos will be sent around and people called before but still.

Yeah way more rigorous. Plus an LPQ and the bigger the book, the bigger the scrutiny (including often outside consultants to check veracity).
Latham’s bylaws require any lateral partner to meet with 40 partners as part of the process. That’s an extreme - but gives you an idea of how rigorous it can get.

Can also confirm that lateral partners have multiple rounds of interviews like associates do when my group is hiring. But it’s more interviewing with firm leaders than in-group with underlings.
