I’ve been in National Tax for over 20 years, and I love it. Great exposure to partners, staff, and clients throughout the entire U.S., including many of our largest clients. And because of my expertise, I have participated in drafting or reviewing numerous AICPA comment letters that have direct impact on tax policy and guidance, and I’ve helped author BNA portfolios and Tax Adviser articles.
WLB isn’t great because I have so many clients with different tax years, so there are always deadlines (constant busy season). I averaged 62 hours a week last fiscal year, even with vacation and holiday time.
I’m an MD, and pay is exceptional. I grew up in poverty, and I’m making more than I ever dreamed. I’m a very generous person, and I love being able to support charities and support my community.
Going to reply here to keep the pwc comments separate from other firms replying. MD - that’s a very admirable position / stance and kudos to you for how happy you seem and how well it has worked out. I have a similar experience in my short time here.
I’m a senior, with about 5 years in the group. Like anything at our firm, we don’t work 9-5s, so is definitely a lot of work with pleasing many different “kings/queens” who are heading the various engagements, if not the clients themselves. Hours aren’t terrible all things considered relative to other groups. It’s very technical and specialized in many regards (afterall, you are the subject matter specialist) so you have be to up for that task and embrace the reality that your exit ops won’t be as broad as other groups. All things considered, I’m much happier here than I would be in a core tax role, so no complaints, definitely paid particularly well comparatively as well. Because you specifically asked about pay, it’s probably about 15-20% higher than core groups, and with advanced degrees, that can be stretched a bit further. Ie seniors start around 100k, and you would easily hit 200k by the time you hit director. Depends on the market so don’t quote me, that’s for a HCOL market.
People are great at PwC anyway! You’d think with such a specialized role, that you’d have trouble getting off the ground being able to relate to colleagues you once saw as “nerds/gods” rattling off tax code, but for the most part people are level headed and very normal when you get to know them. Hope this helps, and DM me if you need help with anything.
