I have only done a few and it never feels easy. I think being clear, calm, and human matters most. People remember how they were treated in those moments.
The fact that you’re worried about how people will feel already says a lot about your character. Empathy is not a weakness in these situations it’s one of the most important qualities you can bring into the room. The people being impacted are going through a difficult and emotional moment, and having someone deliver the message with humanity and compassion matters more than acting detached or “cold.”
You don’t have to become emotionless to be professional. Staying calm, respectful, clear, and kind is enough. If someone cries and you feel emotional too, that simply means you’re human. Most employees will remember how they were treated in that moment more than the exact script that was read to them.
The best thing you can do is be prepared, be direct without being harsh, listen respectfully, and avoid making the conversation feel robotic. Compassionate leadership and HR support are rare during layoffs, and your empathy will likely make an incredibly difficult experience slightly less painful for the people involved.
Be professional and tuck in your emotions
After 6yrs i was told i would never be promoted management because i wssnt mean enuf.ok but i dont stand around and talk of my co workers .if work need done im on it
I am still stunned by the coldness I experienced when being laid off a few years ago. My boss and a senior leader were in the room and just as I received the package, the senior leader got up and walked around to my side of the table. We had had a great relationship and I thought he was coming to give me a hug, so I turned toward him. Instead, he walked behind me, opened the door and ushered me out. It was humiliating but effective. I never had a chance to cry in their presence but the tears definitely came. They still do. It’s not your fault but it sucks on that side of the table.
Here is a good one.being on the "other side" like you. Back in August last year, I had reduced my hours due to a WC that was ongoing, and was returning from a medical leave of 2 months back to a regular schedule.
I meet with my HR manager, who I hired 2 years prior, and the CEO joins in. I though great! They are excited to have me back! Ya, no, that was not the case. They eliminated my position due to strategic planning aligning with a new subsidiary. Now here is the kicker. The CEO who claimed for years I was a good co-worker and friend, said Love you at the end of this meeting. Then turned around and slacked the rest of the org, that due to ongoing medical issues, I decided not to return to work.
Yes, I did notify my WC attorney and still waiting for my WC claim to settle and hopefully move onto retaliation.
