Are there any public firms out there that don’t have billable hours requirements all year? I know that’s the norm just wondering if a unicorn exists

I’m sure EY will introduce unlimited billable hours next year to go with their unlimited PTO

What do you propose as the alternative?

No billable hour requirements 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Real Estate CPA does not have time sheets, they are results based. There are some smaller virtual firms that are results and not hours driven. I do not know of a top 100 firm that does not have billable hours requirements.

We have a total hours expectation but not a billable hour expectation.

At a very small public accounting firm-tax only. No billable requirements here!

I recently received an offer from a ID private firm (1900 billable hours) in the area for about 40k more than my currently salary. Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that firms require a minimum daily time entry? For example, my firm requires us to bill 6 hours a day, whether or not it’s billable work, we have to have a minimum of 6.0 in our time entry system every day or we get flagged. If we’re on vacation we have to pre-bill 6.0 a day. Why the hell do firms do this???

Finally, now that WFH is more accepted (thanks 2020), do you think more industries will “reimagine” this arbitrary 40+ hr. work week?

Some orgs tried/have proven to be more productive with less (e.g. 6hr work days, 4 day work weeks) but I don’t know if consulting leaders are enthusiastic about normalizing this since “it’s the land of billable hours”...

What would it take?

I joined a very prominent midsized firm back in fall which gave me almost no billable work for the first 2 months.
