Houston is one of the most diverse cities in america. I love it, and there is a lot that is wonderful here, but it can also feel like a parking lot with great food and social activities. Houston traffic is really only bad (imo) if you are going into the city in the morning and out of it 4-6:30pm. Living closer in town, the traffic is is not bad compared to other big cities like LA or even Austin. It depends what you are into. Austin is better for outdoorsy stuff but traffic is horrific and it’s not so diverse, with a heavy college influence from UT in the city. No idea about Dallas but I’m from Houston so I instinctively have beef :)
left nyc for Charleston last year and love it
What do the biggest firms pay (first year associates) in Charleston? Can't be more than $120k, right?

All good choices and all are way better cities than NYC. I am in Houston and am happy I started my practice here. Wife and I intend to move back closer to family (non Texas) at some point, but we will be able to do so years earlier due to the COL difference compared to NYC. Houston is especially looking for associates in a lot of categories. PM me and if it works out, willing to split bonus, 50/50
I like Houston and Atlanta. Didn’t see Atlanta mentioned, so throwing that one out there.

I've lived in Dallas and Houston and like both cities. Both have great food options, but I think Houston is slightly better. Dallas has nicer weather and the traffic isn't quite as bad as Houston. House prices are high right now, but obviously way cheaper than NY and a big law salary can get you a lot in Texas. Austin is also a fun place to live, but the legal market there is smaller.
I would do Houston if you can handle the weather. Better food, chiller city, sick patio bars. Dallas is OK, especially if you like steakhouses. It is generally a “nicer” city and would be less of a change coming from the northeast. I don’t know much about Charlotte, but I think corp practices are bigger in Houston/Dallas. More market firms to pick from.
I lived in Dallas for several years. It’s okay. There are good places to eat and go out, but it’s not my favorite city. And traffic in Houston is terrible, and it’s a hot humid there. Between those two, I would choose Dallas. I’ve never lived in Charlotte.
Got a job out here and my SO is in Vegas too. It’s a great city! And you can find several firms that pay $165k for first years. As a local, you never go to the strip unless there’s a restaurant you want to try out or you have friends/family visiting. There’s a lot to do outdoors too, like hiking/trail running in Mt. Charleston area, Red Rock Canyon, and Valley of Fire, kayaking/canoeing in Colorado River…
FYI, Dechert is building up its Lev Fin practice in Charlotte at the moment.
Going to piggyback a little bit here as I am in a similar position.
Are there any finance groups in the South (broadly defined, Richmond down including TX and FL) that people recommend taking a look at?
Would consider Atlanta. Charlotte Dallas Houston out of your options in your post in that order
