Received an offer for an EA position for $57k. I informed the company I would like $80k-$90k and they came back and offered $80k (+ bonuses, profit sharing 401k). Now my current company wants 24 hours to counter, I was paid $66k and recently got a raise to $72k but now they will minimally have to offer $90k+ for me to even consider staying.

Should I set sail for new horizons ? Should I counter again with the new company or is that greedy considering how far they came up? EA is a new position.

There is a reason that most people who accept counter offers still end up leaving within a few months; because money alone is usually not the only factor that causes people to look. If they could have been paying you $12k+ more for a year or more before you sought another offer elsewhere, then you know that they don't value you or they would have paid you more sooner.

Take the new offer. Congrats and good luck!

Agreed, one of my regrets to be completely honest. I walked into my boss’s office told him that I was quitting. Got a better job offer across the street. He stood up, walked across the room, closed the door and said how much money is it gonna take to keep you here. I gave him the number he didn’t even flinch. He gave it to me. Then the next six months was pretty miserable. I got more money, but still hated the culture the structure the environment and then ended up quitting six months later. I should’ve just accepted the job, stuck to my guns and left. By staying I missed a great opportunity to join a great company.

As someone who worked in recruitment, taking a counter offer is never good.

Why be loyal to a company that could RIF a person, maybes give the person 15 min to get their stuff and escort them to their car or the property gate to ensure they leave. If two weeks notice is the minimum professional standards for employees, why aren’t large company’s held to the same standard.
My last company did give me two weeks, but I’ve seen the same company pop a surprise HR meeting and the person barely got time to get their personal stuff, and it wasn’t for cause.

If they were always able to pay you that well and chose not to, you shouldn't trust them to treat you as you deserve in the future. Leave for the new job and don't look back.

like

I chose to accept the higher offer because my then-manager was transitioning to a new role and wanted me to join her. 2.5 years later, I'm now being told that my salary is too high, and I have the choice of either taking a 25% pay cut or being let go, with a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) likely leading to termination. The company I left at the time was willing to match the offer she gave me, but I decided to make the move anyway. My advice would be to stick with your current company if you’re happy with what you’re doing and enjoy the work environment.

like

I've been in your position before. I accepted a counter offer from the company I was going to leave, and ended leaving a year later anyway. In fact, it pissed me off even more because they ponied up $15k more without blinking. That told me that 1. I was a poor negotiator in the first place and 2. They were knowingly and completely satisfied with screwing me for the 5 years prior.

You looked elsewhere for a reason. I suggest you move on (coming from experience).

Take the job, if they value you more for leaving they should have seen that when you were in their employ.

I've been looking for cleaning jobs 😩 since April this year my old job the company went bankrupt so now I'm still looking for jobs i don't understand nz before it used to be so easy getting jobs this 2025 is a very bad year even the jobs on my msd same thing im more than 5years + experience cleaner muilpit tasker can work independently I've got references im drug free with no criminal history im thinking that the msd jobs maybe those work brokers they give jobs to their own race of people because I never have this problem before with work& income since 1999. It's so unbelievable 26 years experience cleaner domestic ,commercial, room attendant housekeeping. Residents. Cleaner , but still nothing im sick of the benefit jobseeker. People saying it's the nz government that's doing this but I think people are RACIST even in workandincome picking their people over me & jobs online some ask if im Chinese or Philippines they don't want islanders anymore im not happy at All......

Hopefully you set sail for new horizons. If you stayed at your old place of employment, they likely won't respect you for essentially cheating on them by interviewing with a new employer. Same goes for personal relationships. If you're with a woman and date others in the middle of the relationship, they lose respect but if you stood alone, the respect level changes. Compare that to opening your own business. Get the analogy?

Weigh your pros and cons . Depending on how long you have been with the company vs starting over at day one on a new job . The things you’re doing now and finally getting a raised seems to be an improvement . This includes your commute time , accrued PTO and benefit package . I had worked 10 years for the hospital and had good benefits & asked for a raise as I was seeing the job offers paying more coming in the door with no experience —than what I was making after 10 years . Denied a raise stating they had too much on their plate and didn’t have time to meet either HR and it wouldn’t be fair to others . Exactly … so put in for everyone to get a raise . Denied . I ended up leaving to work somewhere else & it’s a worse $h!t show at this hospital. Wish I would have just stayed the course ..I was told a few Months after I left they received a raise 😡

Take the new offer. A company that could pay you that much from way before and just offering it now means a terrible lack of honesty and, to me, it's a disrespect towards you.

Take the day and move on, you will be starting at 80 in your new role, that will continue to go up, where’s as you could be at the max end on your current role and may not get much more going forward if you stay longer. Plus it’s more than about money when you start looking at other jobs.

Yeah must be so hard being offered close to 6 figures a year your life must be so tough🙄

I did this once and it was really just hitting the snooze button on the alarm clock for one year. None of the problems that made me want to leave were fixed (they never are), and I know that it also put a target on me because I held all the power and the owners held none, which is always dangerous. I would never ever do that again unless I was currently happy where I was at and a head hunter came after me.

First things first: Congrats! You are in a super comfortable position!

Said that, one way or the other, you will have a much higher salary than before.

But why would you expect the current company to pay 90k+, if the potential new one pays only 80k?

From far away it tells me one thing: You value the idea of having a new experience more than your current job.
Of course there are always risks connected with changing jobs, but if my guess was right: Why even stay for 90k?

So, delete the salary information from your head and then take a decision. Both choices offer a much better salary than what you have right now.

First, congratulations on your new role! Will it still give you the same flexibility schedule wise that had in your last role. Work/life balance is real and important for most. I concur with everyone's responses coming from someone who has now been unemployed for just over a year :( I'm shocked they would have jumped that much higher with your salary regardless of your experience but that is awesome! So many organizations right now are low balling all over the board! May I ask what State you are in?

If you had a good reason to go looking and they matched what you asked for - you better take it.

You always learn more at a new job. Go for it!

The old truism “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side “ comes to mind. Did you start the search for the new job? If so, why? Is money the only motivator? Have you factored in commute costs if any, I mean, it’s only $8k more, what about the culture at the new Company? Had a close friend with a great job; EA to the CEO, moved her entire family out of state to a new high profile job, offering great money incentives etc., she was gone within 2 years. Why, others that were there long before her felt she didn’t fit in, that was it, they let her go. Now she’s stuck. If it were me and not knowing if you have good reason to look elsewhere, I’d stay where I was.

Lots of good advice here. My own experience with the last job I left voluntarily was when my boss asked if he could try to get a counteroffer, I told him "no". I didn't want to be tempted by it if they came through with it (which means they didn't value me enough while I was there), nor did I want him to come back and tell me they wouldn't counter (indicating they didn't find me valuable enough to try to keep). It was better to move on. I was at that new job for just over 21 years, and recently laid off due to all of the changes in the federal government. Was a good run and they treated me pretty well for the vast majority of that time.

AWS vs Cloudflare BDR roles

AWS lowballed but I negotiated to match Cloudflare. Cloudflare offers more equity but AWS has a higher base.

I love Cloudflare. The people are great but it’s an engineering culture and the sales team isn’t as well shaped up and I can’t go for a promotion until at least 18 months of tenure. I am an investor in the company and think of them super highly. I’ve already got half a years SDR experience and AWS promotes quicker.

AWS has prestige but is it worth it?
