Recently accepted an offer to be a copywriter intern this summer! 😁 It’s a goal I’ve been working toward for the past two years. Super excited, it’s a small shop with great talent who have worked at some incredible places. Was wondering if anyone had advice on how I can make the most of this experience and hopefully get signed on full time afterwards? Or how I can leverage the internship to find a Jr. role elsewhere?
best tip i can think of is be proactive. there are going to be slow days and there are going to be days that they are too busy to think of giving you work — it’s not personal. just make sure that you’re always present and offering to help so you’ll become “the person” that they think of when they need something done. that’s how you’ll get the most work
Totally agree Copywriter 2.
I interned at a big agency so my experience is different from what yours will be but my best advice is don’t talk too much. No one likes an intern who talks too much. Show them you’re a good listener.
You’re hired
Congrats. Work hard, be collaborative, have opinions and POV’s, soak in as much from those around you, ask questions, show up on time, be willing to work late, and have a good attitude.
Find a mentor, someone who is willing to take some extra time to answer questions and help grow your talent. That person is your advocate if there’s a chance you could be hired.
If there is no opening, that person may become great support throughout your career. I’m still in contact with the copywriter who took me under her wing 20 years ago. Sometimes she comes to me for advice now.
Great advice, Senior Content Strategist 1. Mentors are so key. They can totally change the trajectory of a young (or older) creative’s career.
Towards the end of your internship (maybe 2 weeks before end date), I’d ask to extend it! It shows interest and the desire to go above and beyond. I believe that’s how I ended up getting a full time offer at my first agency.
Best of luck. Just hustle like you’ve never hustled before. You will do great! And remember, have fun!
Coach
Get to know everyone.
If you can help ANY of them, offer to every chance you get.
Don’t be annoyingly eager, but be happy to work on anything and view the smallest, most insignificant task as a chance to show off the greatness you’re capable of.
Start applying to jobs with a few weeks left just in case. If you get an offer, you can use it to help get an offer here; or it’s a fallback if not.
Good luck!!!
I appreciate that 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Be honest, open and professional with your work hours. Work efficiently, be a good listener, gain exposure to as much as possible. Good luck
Just do your best on what they ask of you and hope it works out. Good luck.
Loads of great advice here but one very specific piece I'd give is: have opinions and express them, but please don't act like your opinions are God's gift to the room.
I remember the absolute cringe of an intern cutting people off and going on a rant that started with "What we *need* to do here is..." as though he was the bossman.
This is all awesome advice. Thank you! Ready to put in the work.
