Roomate got furloughed in Ohio and now gets an additional $600 a week on top of the normal $424 a week because he was affected by corona virus. Kind of sad that somebody can make 80% of my salary...

What’s sad is the toxic way so many Americans have been trained to think about our social safety net.

likesmarthelpfulupliftingfunny

I mean, your original point had nothing to do with forced labor for convicted criminals. You stated the existence of slavery creates a situation where the social safety net is purposefully underfunded. This implies widespread existence of slavery for non-incarcerated individuals, whether you intended that or not.

1) Your friend may make 80% of what you make but it’s only for 8 months. So they aren’t going to be making as much as you think
2) Your friend has lost all the benefits you have and non-employer health insurance is expensive
3) Your employment history is unaffected so your future earning potential is better than your friends
4) Having this extra unemployment benefit will stimulate the economy faster because people will not default on rent, continue discretionary spending etc

So all in all, this benefits you too. Lastly, don’t refer to this person as your friend because they are definitely not if you can complain about something like this when it comes to them. Friends wish each other well

It’s frustrating people out of work aren’t suffering enough?

Yeah, kinda sad how people who are laid off, for reasons outside of their control, can still pay for basic food and shelter. 🙄

likefunnysmarthelpful

OP - would you prefer the alternative where he didn’t have enough money to pay his share of the rent, forcing you to cover it in his place?

likefunnysmart

No, it's not okay to be bitter. Crab mentality is the mark of a loser. Worry about yourself and not others.

like

The only time you should look at someone’s plate is to see if they have enough, not to be envious ;)

likeupliftingsmarthelpfulfunny

OMG, this just reminded me of my grand mother when she said this. Thank you!! 🥰🤗

likeuplifting

OP, I'm sorry, but seriously? You're jealous of someone who is unemployed? Finding another job IS a job and as underpaid as you might feel, making 75k out of college as Big 4 Advisory is much higher than most of the US, where we have higher salary bands than the rest of the entire world. You need perspective, badly.

like

Seriously. Even with the extra $600/week he’s only making $53k/year. And unemployment income is subject to both Fed and state taxes. Is $53k close to what he was making before? If not, then you should just be quiet and be glad that’s not you.

like

Or you could feel happy for your roommate that they still manage to have access to money to survive.

likefunnysmart

What do you do? You sound underpaid for strategy

likefunny

You can always volunteer to be laid-off, I’m sure a big firm would gladly take volunteers at this point

likesmartfunny

Lol If only...

OP: I think a lot of other people including me would have chosen to empathize with their roommates if they were in your position. There is something very wrong with the way you are thinking.

That deserves more than a pedestrian like....bravo!

I know somebody who wasn’t forced out of work but convinced their boss to lay them off temporarily knowing they could collect almost twice as much in unemployment now as their normal salary... really a shame that people think like that and will take advantage of the system thinking it’s just free money made up out of nowhere.

likesmart

When u have to pass a simple law to cover a large and varied populace, there will be such situations. I’m less worried about a guy getting an extra 600 bucks when hedge funds and chain restaurants are getting away with millions in grants.

like

Don’t know why you’re getting all this hate OP, I’m kinda with you here...for the folks saying how terrible of a friend he is, maybe, but from a purely practical perspective if I gave you two options, which would you take?
1. Make 100k a year for working 50 hours a week.
2. Make 80k a week doing absolutely nothing, apart from the occasional job search.

I think I know which I would choose...

like

You have to remember, people working have a reasonably expected income for the sustainable future. People who are already laid off will get this benefit for maybe 6 months. I would much rather have steady income coming in than run out of support in 6 months and still be looking for a job.

likesmart

They’re unemployed due to a global pandemic and your ass is focused on throwing shade? Omg mind your business and be grateful you have a job. You are a parasite.

like

Whoa, whoa, whoa... people who need things done should be grateful to have workers to do the work. Slow down there chief.

OP I see your point. I was furloughed recently and the way the system is set up at the moment I don’t have very much of an incentive to look for a job. I could try and get a job at a grocery store FT or something but the amount I would make is about the same as my unemployment benefits. If I work PT then I start to lose some of my benefits because the threshold is so low.

Part of getting unemployment is proving you are looking for work.

This is like being mad because the poor can get free food at a soup kitchen and discounted food at a food pantry.

Like others have eloquently stated, being long-term unemployed is not an enviable position. While you are working, you are building connections, developing your skills, building a work history. Your friend isn’t, and had an uncertain future ahead of them.

likeuplifting

Well, the point of them is really to acknowledge that no matter what you do, no one is hiring, so we’re going to make sure you don’t DIE as we get through this tough time, since you’re out of a job through no fault of your own.
