Sometimes you just need to push back .. your mental health is important
I personally remain calm and politely tell the manager/partner that you can’t take on additional work because you have other engagements to work on and ask when they need it by to see if you can squeeze it on another day or next week on your schedule .. if you know you can’t squeeze it into your schedule then politely ask if you can pass it to someone else that has capacity
Do you set firm budgets and timelines for your staff? I have one staff who does better with me planning out his work for the day ie cash should take 2 hours, debt 3 hours, and start PP&E. I think it’s completely overbearing but that’s the only way they don’t bill 10 hours to the client and get nothing done
There are budgets and deadlines for sure but I generally think there’s a lack of accountability at times. It has caused deadlines to be missed or others to work a lot at the back end of the engagement to meet them. I genuinely believe that everyone involved can shoulder some responsibility but I guess I would hope the managers and partners to step in at some point. They are aware of the problems but they have so much other stuff going on too.
And it has made an impact on my overall mood in general. Tonight was suppose to be a nice dinner with my wife but I was just exhausted after 60 hours in 5 days and still having to work tomorrow and it’s hard to flip the switch sometimes.
