Because believe it or not people still give bad ones. And someone with such a lack of self awareness that they’d list someone as a reference who did not have a good experience with them is… telling.
And even the good reference checks can give insight on a person’s strengths and weaknesses based on what they choose to bring up. At the point anyone is checking references they basically *want* to give the person the job, so it’s just one last peace of mind step and an opportunity to understand a person (where they excel, where they may need extra support) before they start.
Reference checks can be great if done by a hiring manager who asks nuances questions and digs with follow-ups, really picking apart how well people did key aspects of the job. Having them done by HR is a complete waste of time, though.

Yeah if you don’t have 3 people that can vouch for you as a full-grown adult, you and your future employer both have a problem.

Yeah this is a weird one. I worked at one place for a very long time and had to provide reference. The only reference I had was coworkers of the company I was. I didn’t want to tell anyone I was hoping to leave until it was a done deal.
