This my friends, is the definition of privilege. Savor it, OP.
My mother in law died due to COVID-19 complications. I personally know 6 people who died from it and many others who were severely ill for an extended period. Many of my friends who are mostly artists / musicians supplementing their income as waiters could not pay their rent and so close to being homeless. Just sharing.....
I got laid off because of covid and also lost my grandpa to covid. Also lost my very young friend (25) to mental health issues because of covid. Here, now you know someone op
I know someone who also lost their mental health battle because of covid :(
I don’t know any of the Holocaust survivors, people who died in 9/11 or soldiers who died in action. I feel extremely lucky
But I do have compassion for all those people and their family. So I don’t understand the objective of this post, but count your blessings and have empathy for others who have suffered or are suffering.
I try to help out by donations or any other ways within my means. Still feel lucky and privileged
OP notes “that it’s weird that disasters are happening all around me but that I don’t see them.” Not weird: privilege + luck. But the people who trumpet that covid and it’s multi-layered effects are not real or problematic are dangerous. Just like those who said similar things during the Holocaust, etc.
Cognitive bias. Example: Just because you don’t know someone personally who died in a car crash doesn’t mean people don’t die in car crashes. Quite the contrary.
weird flex but ok ....
I am at a manufacturing firm with 500 personnel on the shop floor, across multiple plants. Every single week, we have two or three new positives, four or five out with Covid, and another two dozen on contact tracing isolation, pending testing.
Fortunately, our contract-trace positive rate is near zero, excluding family/roommates/carpoolers, which (along with social media) indicates folks are bringing in from outside. We are hyper sensitive about distancing (via reconfigured equipment, staggered lunch, isolated shifts, masks, temp checks, hand san stations, etc). We laid off a chunk early due to drop in demand and fighting like hell to keep the rest. It’s the worst game of whack-a-mole you can imagine and very very tangible.
My wife’s grandmother also died from COVID. Really miserable end; physically healthy but bad dementia so had no awareness of pandemic much less her own health situation and no family could be in the same room as her to calm her or hold her hand while she slipped.
Wow that's so awful that you had to go through that! I have a grandma with Parkinson disease and my family is actually really worried about her and my grandpa because they live in LA but still sneak to Costco on occasion even though my aunt lives a two minute drive away from them and they are both extremely high risk.
My neighbor passed away from Covid. My wife’s uncle did as well. I know a lot of people who have had Covid and have luckily survived. And I think everyone I know personally knows someone who has been impacted by Covid. Also, I lost my job in these times. So good for you OP. You are lucky. I am lucky too as nobody in my immediate family contracted Covid . Although not as lucky as you.
I’m in the same boat and i come from very humble beginnings and a small town. Not a single first degree Covid positive or laid off friend or family member.
2 of my family members have passed away from coronavirus, my friends grandpa has died from it, and I know 3 friends who have had it. If you haven’t experienced layoffs, surely you have experience a pay cut/small raise from EY? This is not a normal year in pay raises because they are trying so hard to not lay any one off
I'm really sorry that you had to lose family members to the virus.

I, along with 10% of my office that I know of, had Covid in February- this is suspected but can't be proven since no one knew what it was at the time.
I had symptoms till May.
I lost my cousin due to Covid, I lost the spiritual leader of my community and consider yourself lucky if you haven’t had to attend a funeral via zoom because that is traumatic and something you’ll never forget.
I also live in a state engulfed in flames with air quality so bad that we can’t go outdoors.
Count your blessings
SC1, thinking of you.
Probably just reach out farther in your network...?
Also same rxn as the above - not sure what to do w this comment lol
Count your blessings OP bc there are many that are not as fortunate as you and your loved ones.
Sister-in-law’s mom died from covid. Spouse was laid off in April, so we’re struggling financially. (And we’ve also had non-covid illness in our family.) One thing I’ve learned recently: when things seem bad, remember that they can always get worse... 😞
I got laid off from Covid, just lost a contract gig due to budgets being cut from Covid, lost my room in my apartment because my roommate rushed into marriage due to Covid. Also know several ppl whose family members or friends have passed due to Covid
Ok?

You’re lucky then.
