technically, working from home would include that you have provided a professional space that provides ability to do work. Some WFH contracts indicate that this before signing. In any event, most just use a virtual backdrop. I do not see the intrusion of your private life, since during your hours your are WFH it is for the company.
You are lucky to have a stable job working from home with benefits. If it only needs logging in, I would just do it.
This is just so creepy and controlling. Especially since you are a paralegal. Do you get your work done? I would start looking around for another job.
When the firm I retired from had people working from home the attorneys were given the option of monitoring the at home workers through their computers or not. My attorney choose not to monitor any of his home workers, the work we did was proof enough. Great attorney.
Worked somewhere where security cameras were installed in the ceilings "for our protection". Nope. It was just an insecure boss wanting to watch everyone on a bank of monitors he had installed in his office.
I don't work there anymore.

That is sick! There is some expectation of privacy that we are all entitled to, though it seems to be less these crazy days. What's next? Cameras in the restroom??????
I am sorry to hear that. I would hate working on cameras. That would make me feel so uncomfortable.
I think those in firm who don't get to WFH are pissed and probably complained to HR. Buncha Karens.

Btw, did you ask THEM if you could have a two-way camera, just in case you want to watch them in action? Bet they wouldn't like that!
Genius retort!

Too Big Brother for me.
That'd be a dealbreaker for me.
I think your immediate concern is mooted by your imminent return to office work. But it may retain symbolic relevance worthy of attention. If I were your employer, whether remote or in-person, I would seek an agreement with you on the time needed to complete for any particular assignment. Once agreed, I would return at the agreed time with the obvious expectation. I would not watch you in the meantime.
If my expectation was unfulfilled at the deadline in any way, then, you would receive my attention. And my attention would focus on whether you violated my trust.
This issue of “trust,” is why a discussion might still be appropriate even though you are returning to the office. If distrust is present remotely, it will also appear in-person. If you identify this in your workplace, I might not expose it too completely. Inquiring in passing shall do. If distrust is confirmed, shine up your resume.
I wish I could hire you.

I agree with this, "This issue of “trust,” is why a discussion might still be appropriate even though you are returning to the office. If distrust is present remotely, it will also appear in-person. If you have the option to be at home while on camera, or be at the office in person and you don’t like the idea of having a camera look into your home…go to the office and work. If you want a full remote job, find one.

There are options to keep the home private. Privacy walls can be ordered online. They come with their stands and the walls come in different sizes.

What I did when I was told that was how it was going to be, I felt the exact same way. It is an invasion to the privacy of my home life. I hated so I ordered two big standing screen walls (blue), put one behind me and the other one on the other side of my desk. I creeped me out too much. So, it was good when it was over. I understand both sides of the isle (no one trust anyone much anymore). So, it is what it is. I was super glad when I left that company. Sent them their computer and equipment back and said idios. Never looked back.
As far as taking the remote privileges away, I don't know what to say about that. Have you tried freelancing / contract paralegal services? It's an option any way. Good luck.
That’s so bonkers I kind of want you to blast the firm. Come back after you quit and tell us.
Update: Several paralegals just up and quit last week. They didn't tell anyone until they picked up and walked out the door. You have to be a very strong person to have the ability to do that.
