Would you mind sharing a link to both posts? I am intrigued…
This is the world we live in. Similar kind of thing, though different. My colleague was upset about not getting sales and revenue credit for some projects where she had done a lot of work. She wrote an email laying out why this should be corrected. Her husband read it before sending and said you are not being firm enough about this. Her husband had a similar problem a year or so previously working in a different part of the same firm and pulled up the email he had sent and had her adopt most of his language. His email had gotten good results and he had been told that the email really did the trick. For her, she got reprimanded for being aggressive and demanding. And no credit for all her work. I know this is anecdotal, but there is lots of evidence that women are punished for saying the things a man would say.
I don’t think you can say something is ‘none sense’ - pretty broad sweeping assumption there
Quite negative) set of responses. It’s one data point but it made me realise that there is a significant bias in this bowl, and probably others.
First sign should have been that people just assumed Principal working in Consulting talking about work must mean they are male 🙃🙃
Wouldn’t surprise me. Very Online communities tend to have a lot of self selection in who participates.
Also possible that your writing style is male-coded in some way, or neutral + people defaulted to male
Y’all really be complaining about everything
Lia Thomas? That you?
One time I was playing chess online and my opponent told me I “played like a girl” (I’m a guy). Just to see what would happen I said “I am a girl” and he (I assume it was a male opponent) started alternately insulting me/hitting on me/demanding a draw/rematch when I started to beat him. So yes, I am willing to believe that women do face more aggression on the internet for no good reason.
That’s why we have our women’s bowls. A lot of latent sexism in this world.
It’s not even latent sexism.
Not sure what’s wrong with some people in this thread. Op clearly said they made an observation and they keep attacking her for “causing problems where there’s none” and asking her to “toughen up”. She didn’t ask anyone to change or expect action, she simply shared her observation. She doesn’t need to “toughen up”, and she has a right to share what she experienced. You don’t think it’s worth your time? Cool, keep it moving. You don’t need to comment on every single thing you see.

Must. Comment. On. This.
Link to both posts please?
I feel you!! I find when I make posts on fishbowl (and Reddit FWIW) I can sometimes get “mate”, “bro”, “dude” in the comments and although these terms can be used for all genders, I always assume it’s because the commenters think I’m a man. Very frustrating
Hilarious is understatement🙄

U should put the pronoun She/her in your login name. Problem solved.
There literally isn’t a point
OP, your observation is not misplaced. Yep, welcome to life as a woman, especially in business. Just look at some of the comments on this thread alone.
Many biases to stay aware of- some detailed here https://hbr.org/2022/09/3-workplace-biases-that-derail-mid-career-women?ab=hero-main-text
Welcome to life as a person.
Not a surprise. Gender bias exists in real life and online. The fact that we're on FB probably magnifies the bias, as people can hide behind anonymity.

Until fishbowl is hit with a data leak
Nothing new, but a good reminder of how real sexism is. Reminds me of the male-to-female transgender physicist who changed her first name from a male to female name, and overheard colleagues talking about “how much better her brother’s work is”, not realizing it is the same person.
This has already been shown and studied extensively. It happens at work, and especially in the gaming world.

I'm curious what the topic was, if knowing you were a woman would have possibly turned the prevailing opinion against you

Damn that's pretty lousy. Sorry to hear that women still have to deal with that this far into the 21st century. I don't think I can say anything that will help, but I can offer an uplift

If you now know the rules of the game, why not learn to be persuasive in a different way?
It is a Principal, everyone! Bow down!
Elitist snob, this one is!
If it makes you feel better, it’s a well known phenomenon that people think that they’re talking to men online. Lots of Reddit threads about this and it shows that’s people assume they’re talking to men online. It’s not right or wrong but that’s how it is.
Wish I could say that this didn't exist or you perceived something that wasn't there, but I have definitely seen people (in professional situations) react to things from women in a way that is different than I think they would from a man. I try to correct it when I see it and be aware. It shouldn't hold you back, but something to be aware of and also to try to educate people about being focused on. There are advantages and disadvantages that everyone has, some based on gender. I am a middle aged man (saying that so people will be nicer in any responses).
Plot twist - OP is a man and this was a test and all of you out here letting your biases run Willy nilly
Hah! You got me
