When is it best to leave consulting? Here's how I think about it.

Last, what skills do most employers value? In my experience, this dictates 2 optimal jumping off points:
(a) 2-3 years in. Consulting "tool kit" is solid
(b) ~1-2 year into Manager. Employers value experience managing people.

I would say 3 out of my 8 interviews went deep into the traditional product interview questions of which Product Sense and Execution were a part of them. One of the rounds was a take-home case presentation as well which was an open ended product exercise to review a product I use and provide recommendations / features that we could develop and create an implementation plan that would bring it all together.
If it a reasonably comparable offer, I don't see the issue. Headcount a change all the time. I was once in the middle of an interview process where they switched the role to a better one and asked me to interview with a few more people (higher up). I absolutely would have gone through with it, but I had 2 other offers on the table.
It says a lot of the company was impressed enough with you to not make you go through the interview process again for a new role.
It sounds like maybe they could have relayed the news better, but maybe did not receive confirmation until final round was already scheduled.
Now if they're offering you a lesser job, that is total BS. And i would absolutely question whether not this is a shady ploy to pay you less or whatever.
Yeah I’ve spoken with the recruiter already when she broke the news and will be speaking with the new hiring manager in the next few days as part of an introduction call.
Fully intend on accepting as well since it turns out the new role is more closely related to my background once it’s all said and done
FWIW I intend on accepting either way as the role still rolls up to the Director and Sr Directors who I have spoken with but still found the entire situation a little weird and not sure what to make of it

Same happened with me as well in a pre IPO tech which I joined as a PM.
What level, IC 3,4, 5?
I believe it’s IC4 based on the comp they’re offering and what I’ve seen on levels.FYI but never actually asked this unfortunately
How did you prepare for the interviews? A Facebook recruiter just reached out for a PM role but I haven’t interviewed for a few years

Come from a pure Consulting background with Deloitte and 8YOE. I’d also suggest just having clarity in your story and be able to demonstrate your commitment to your customers and the experience they have at every step of the interview process.

Same thing sort of happened with me, I don't know if I was just runner up for the first role or what happened - but either way the offer was good and the new manager was pretty similar to the first one so it all worked out.
