Yep! I just re-entered the freelance world and was asked to take three in the last few weeks. One company paid and the rest expected me to do it for freesies. Come on!

I always think how companies treat you in the interview is a great indicator of how they'll treat you as an employee. Companies that have candidates take "tests" despite having a portfolio feel like they're asking you to be comfortable being exploited for labor/energy from the jump. Bad.

I did one for my first internship. Wish I hadn’t. I was just so desperate to get in, I didn’t care. Glad I wasn’t there long. I came to find they were awful with paying people. They’re going out of business now. Call it Karma.

I’m not sure I agree with this. A couple of hours for something like a test — that’s not stealing creative from you, but just demonstrates your skills - is a good way to weed out people who pad their portfolios. I’m in PR, tho, and realize asking ad people to write copy or something for a current client could get dicey. But on the hiring side, I’ve had some situations where applicants submit these beautiful writing samples, and then their writing test is garbage. It raises red flags for sure...the final product of any writing effort usually reflects a collaborative process, so it’s not always a true measure of somebody’s ability to write well on their own, and that’s table stakes in comms.
A friend was given 2-3 days to write a campaign plan. I thought that was smarter than the typical writing test... showed a command of strategy, how to bring together all the elements, researching & bringing all the firm’s capabilities to the table... I hope to crib that idea some day.
Considering how much time, effort and money it takes to build your portfolio in the first place, we’ve already done the free writing test. Pass!
Good on you. You have to think of your creative output as your product. If you expect clients to value your time, you have to demonstrate that your time is valuable. You did the right thing, in my opinion.
I did an assessment for a job I really wanted. I hate the idea of it and honestly I wouldn’t do it for a place I was just meh about but I wanted this job. They gave me a brief and asked for a mini campaign with a mood board and 3 posts and gave me the most arbitrary feedback and I didn’t get the job. I spent 5 days working on it and Will never do that again.
