I get asked this question every time at the end of the first screen call, usually I do my homework and look what they usually offer for that role if it is not already stated in their JD, and based on that I give also a range that is within my expectations for the role. It has worked alright for me so far, the only difficult thing that I started doing recently is say no a priori when the budget is below my expectations, even if the recruiter says there could be space for a bump, that usually does not end well!
Why would you expect them to answer..I am sure the team has range and budget for the role. Most locations would require to post anyway for tech hub. Provide your range and total and see if it works for them
I would much rather a candidate ask me waht the range is for the role and then tell me whether or not their expectatons fall into that range. I hate when they don't ask for the range. I have seen far too many people undervalue themselves and leave money on the table.

i think its tough, because at a certain point some people just need a job!

Transparency usually helps both sides move faster. Recruiters mainly want to know if expectations are in the same range as the role’s budget. If it’s close, it rarely removes someone from consideration — it just sets the frame for negotiation later.
