Former SOF enlisted here, I had very similar decision points as you. Took some risk foregoing a FT MBA and ended up in a cyber strategy & transformation role. Much of it boils down to building enough business & industry context, telling your story in a cohesive way to a hiring manager, and getting connected to the right people. Also enrolled in a T20 PT MBA program, but not when I was hired. Feel free to DM me.
Lockheed Martin and other defense companies around the country are the best thing to do as you transition. They all appreciate our service, and even CEOs and other executives are veterans.
Especially be on the lookout for DoD SkillBridge opportunities as well
Shoot me a DM. My co-worker is a 180A who made the transition to our Cyber Risk&Reg practice who would be a solid connection to network with. I’ll connect y’all on LinkedIn
May I ask why PM? What type of industry? PM for construction is diff than TPM at Amazon. What your long-term goals are? And what your approach is to network (other than this post)?
Happy to help
SA1 makes a great point it sounds like you're not sure what you want to go and getting your MBA at a top school will help you establish a network and possibly find your next thing.
My experience is that project managers are treated like garbage at most firms and their career trajectory isn’t great. Usually functions like finance and ops have to most respect but I’d suggest trying to find P&L ownership or the right path to get you to P&L ownership at a F500
I can connect you with some of the SOF guys at my company as well. DM me if you’re interested.
