Starting at PwC in October- a few friends are going on a 7 day cruise Dec 30. Should I buy a ticket, or will the firm hate me for going on vacation right after New Years?

Definitely talk to your team when you start, but the office is generally dead those three days back.

like

Just go.

like

Oh my god. You haven't even started yet. Do not talk to your team. This is stupid. Book the ticket and tell them you're traveling when you start. You don't need to ASK to take vacation - you simply need to inform teams ahead of time.

like

This year we only get 1/1 off so you'll have to take four days of vacation on top of already having the week off before then. It really depends on your group- I'm part of one where we really need to start ramping up for busy season that first week, we do a lot of training as well. So the firm overall may not hate you, but your group might, especially since you don't know what the norm is yet.

like

My teams are never very busy the first week or so back from that winter break. Most people take a full two weeks and honestly I hope the staff takes that too so I don't have to arrange to have somebody around to oversee them. Disclaimer: I'm in risk assurance.

like

I booked a week vacation after holidays the first year I started and didn't notify my team. I told HR so they could book in my vacation.

like

You don't need to tell people BEFORE YOU START THE JOB!? This is absurd

like

If you book it before you start no one can really hold it against you

like

Talk to your team

Good to know. Looks like I'll wait and feel out the team first before committing

The week after the Holidays is normally fairly slow I would think your team would be fine with that. Only thing I can think of is if you're on call or scheduled for inventory counts as most first years are around year end.

Y'all are all forgetting about inventory rotations

Lol I wasn't going to talk to anyone before starting- I just said I'd wait to book the flights and vacation until I start and can feel out how much work usually comes in right after the new year (talking to peers, not HR or anything). Take a chill pill (and a reading comprehension course), homies.

It's true that you can go the route of just informing them after the fact, but do you really want to start out within the first few months of working as the guy who screwed over the team by taking a bunch of vacation during a time when they actually do need people? Obviously your mileage may vary, I'm in a specialty tax group and it would raise some eyebrows. You could wind up where it's not an issue at all. It's just a matter of optics.

That being said- I wouldn't reach out to them before you've actually started the job. It's up to you whether you want to take the risk or not, and whether you're going into tax or audit or advisory definitely makes a difference. With most other tax groups it'd be fine as my understanding is they really don't start getting to be all hands on deck until mid-Jan at the earliest.

Audit or tax?

I am ideally looking for someone to rent it out for the entire week for about 3K total. Message me for more information!
