Starting my MBA soon, and the class Slack is overwhelming. People are organizing networking hangouts, alumni panels, community service, etc. The calls I’ve been on have felt a bit tryhard. I’m burnt out from work and don’t really want to engage until the fall. That said, I also can’t help but feel I’ll be at a disadvantage if I don’t. Thoughts?

Definitely try hard city. Don’t worry you won’t be out of it, it’s a small slice of the class that has the drive or time to participate in those things now

My take is that you'll have two full years to get to know these people, so engage to the extent that you feel comfortable doing, but there's no need to go overboard.

A small, high-quality network of people who enjoy hanging out with each other can go much further in the long run than a large but loose network that doesn't foster strong bonds.

like

It always starts off like that but you eventually figure it out and know what to engage in and what to punt. I wouldn’t stress

Thanks all. Not sure if I’m being judgmental and/or sensitive.

You can literally do nothing from now until the day you start and do just fine in both academics and personal relationships.

Kellogg was great because we had KWEST so I got a nice friend network at the start but I branched out very quickly.

Mind sharing which school?

Would rather not - sorry!!

Haha I’m in the GSB and it’s the same thing... like you already got in can you chill? You don’t have to prove your credentials to me.

Most of my friends mentioned for the alum network it’s not your immediate class that you benefit from so I’m distancing myself and enjoying the time before I have to start.

Invest in figuring out your bucket list and priorities. Not enough time to do everything

This was absolutely true at my bschool (Anderson). take some time off from slack - no need to engage until a couple weeks before school starts. Enjoy your b school time!

My friend has following offers from three companies after MBA (two offcampus and one from campus)

1. Finance Effectiveness/ EPM role at one of the Big 4
2. Deal Advisory role at one of the Big 4
3. Organization strategy role from one of the top consulting companies (not Big 4)

Which role offers the best exit options? All the offers from US support teams of the companies.
OS role offers better than the other two (only slightly), but I am interested in a good profile

A question from a youngster. Is working at a big big company with slightly low pay better or working at a much smaller company with higher pay better?

In the future, after a few years, let’s say I’m at a small company and want to switch to big big company, will the “small names” hurt my chance to get into the big doors?

I mean big big company is like 10x bigger than the small one if this was a factor. Assume everything else the same, WLB, commute, teams, etc.

Additional Posts in Consulting

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
