Strategy is a broad term and the answer here depends on phase of work in the strategy assignment, as well as specific focus of the strategy assignment.
Generally, strategy is focused on top line growth and focusing on âwhere to play and how to winâ - there are parts where youâre doing a lot of workshops to gather a broad list of ideas, there are times when youâre doing hardcore research and interviews to understand the size of the prize, and there are times when youâre building slides to convey to decision making executives clearly what options are and what pros and cons are.
Many strategy projects will also have different work streams that may focus more or less on some of the different areas, and some projects that are one off âhelp us think through this problemâ get lumped into âstrategyâ that may have different work steps as you go through the assignment.
In general, anything strategy focused is probably fairly high stakes (or perceived to be before you discover it isnât), relatively short time frame, and gives some sort of education to frame a strategic decision for a key executive - strategy consultants are hired to do research and frame options / results for answering key questions.
Yes it is lol

Lots of definitions of strategy, but the one that I think about is any kind of client situation where the moves a client can make towards their desired outcome are orthogonal or asymmetric or otherwise outside of their span of control. Usually meeting that outcome will trigger some enterprise-wide adjustment or transformation in some way.
The day-to-day usually consists of:
+ using/creating logical frameworks to diagnose a client challenge and hypothesize a solution
+ desktop research and analysis on clientâs org structure, stakeholder environment, trends, context etc
+ some kind of market analysis in Excel - sizing, forecasts under various scenarios etc. Sometimes more sophisticated models where necessary
+ stakeholder interviews to add qualitative layer to analyses and generate buy-in
+ creating slides to summarize insight (telling the story) and prioritize the actions that are within the clientâs span of control to deliver the outcome they are looking for
Literally all of the stuff you just listed. It varies exactly what (day-to-day) based on where we're at in the development cycle.
The biggest challenge is the story-telling. Not because it's hard to craft a story, but because the selling points really vary based on which executive it's going to and what you need that person to do with the information. Sometimes one slide will need to pass an exec, then be good enough for that exec to take to two other execs and convince them too.

What specific strategic role are we referring to? your day-to-day and your responsibilities differ from one role to another.
Idk, humor me, whichever is your specific type
