Partner: Not sure, I’ll just be bringing a bucket.

Me: Haha, I was thinking of diapers myself

Partner: Haha, that’s a good one, I’m going to use it

Me: It’s all yours, you could sell it better (meaning his delivery in my mind)

Partner: because I’m old?

*elevator closes*

I have my annual review and salary negotiations coming up next month. I am a third year doing general litigation in a big firm in LA. I am currently in the $100,000-$125,000 range billing 2100. I exceeded my hours last year by 50 hours. Am I reaching too high if my expectation is to be in the $130,000-$150,000 range? Any advice on negotiation higher a billable for higher salary? Thank you!

Applied to a firm through a friend and the hiring manager told me she’ll submit my materials to the partners. I’m trying not to read tea leaves, but it’s been 4 days and I still haven’t heard anything. Does anyone know what the process is like after you pass HR’s screen, and how long it typically takes to get an interview request?

I’m pretty sure colleagues at my firm are inflating their billable hours. Is this the norm? I suspect many of you will think this is obvious and/or that I’m naive but wtf? I find hitting 2200 is tough even with a good sized work load. Am I just expected to play the game? I don’t want to sound self-righteous but if most are lying just to make the requirement, then maybe the requirement should be lower.

Is it normal to struggle with the transition to starting your first legal job? I did all the things - graduated law school, passed the bar, started at the big law firm that gave me my SA offer 2 years ago… Now, I’m feeling miserable. It’s only been 2 weeks and I’m not particularly enjoying work. I was totally burnt out on law school at the end and it was a struggle to finish. I figured I was just “over” the law school grind.
