Here’s a hypothetical:

A company has 2 candidates, aged 25-30, equal in every respect save one’s a man the other’s a woman. Maybe the woman is a slightly better candidate overall. They’d have equal comp.

Company considers the woman a riskier bet due to possibility she’ll take maternity leave — and considers the man less risky for his ineligibility to take as much leave. 🤷

They told me to focus on contract management, which I have been doing for the past year. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
