Where do I begin? Anxiety due to communication via Skype/Teams/messaging and 1-1 calls right now is my biggest issue. I am constantly sitting on my hands and taking notes of what people say so I can analyze it after the call. Did they mean it literally? Do I have something to worry about? Did I say too much? Did I ask too many questions? My biggest fault is trying to “active listen” and repeating what I think someone is saying and have them tell me I’m getting it wrong. I try to make most of my communication via email but I never seemed to have this problem in the office before Covid. As someone with ASD who is old enough to have been diagnosed as “Asperger’s syndrome” initially, I was able to mask and overcompensate for years by memorizing certain facial expressions and social cues, while non-verbal cues weren’t my strong suit (obviously) I could still get a lot of hints and feedback from the things I COULD pick up on. Now that I have an entire data set removed from my interactions I have to rely on strictly verbal communication and I feel like I’m missing the mark SO often lately.
I’m also at K&E (and also on team old-enough-for-Asperger’s), and would be happy to talk through strategies for calls and Zoom meetings sometime if you want to DM me. I’m in IP Lit and have been told that I’m excellent in hearings/on my feet, so I assume I’ve figured out the masking thing pretty well at this point.
