The best compromise solution for student debt is to make student loans interest free

Yes. And also make education more affordable for future generations so you don't end up with another trillion dollars in loans in a few years.

like

Facts. Happy to pay back what I owe, not double what I borrowed

like

A1 I shouldn't have to explain to you why that's a non-take

The interest isn't the real killer, it's the sheer size of the loans themselves - stagnant wage growth alongside obscenely high college costs. Tuition has outpaced wage growth by something like a whole order of magnitude over the past 4-5 decades. Way more % than the interest accrued over the life of a loan.

like

Interest is absolutely the killer. One of the loans I took out was for 14k. After paying roughly $120 every month for 10 years, I owed under 11k. Better believe once I realized that, I paid that loan off, too bad I wasn’t paying attention sooner

like

What incentive would there be to make loans? People need to be smarter about taking out loans.

@Director so people in poverty should just remain destitute and not try to have a better life?

Community College where I live + expenses (transportation, food etc) is easily 45k or more for the degree and that is not including housing cost. Not only that but now your only connections are other poor and underprivileged individuals who can't afford or weren't smart enough for a good school.

When you are born to parents who own nothing and have no savings, you have to pay for everything on loans just to be able to have the same opportunities. You can wait until you're 25 and your parents income no longer counts so you can receive financial aid but now you are 7 years behind everyone else.

Please come back to reality.

Forgiving loans won’t cure the underlying problem of too many people going to college and the prices getting out of control - if anything, it would make it worse. I think the most reasonable way of helping the people who can’t make the payments is to make it like any other debt that can be discharged through bankruptcy.

like

Never said anything about curing. But it would alleviate a lot of pressure in households

Nah, how else do entities make money? Must support big businesses since they’re the backbone of society. /s

I think concept of college needs to be redone or abolished. I can only speak specifically to accounting, but to do the job you just need a couple of excel classes, some accounting books with solutions in the back that you can reference, and some English grammar books. I’m not sure how I or the world got scammed into spending so much for this piece of paper.

If not then discourage large amount of people from college and funnel them to trade school. Makes very good money and no debt.

like

Love the inability of those who don’t know what sarcasm is even when it’s explicitly stated.

Bain- I can’t convince people that find it okay to spend 25-50k/year in college fees to learn things that can be found in a library. I was also not aware that only colleges can provide the exclusive ability to develop critical thinking skills through problems found in version 17 of a common textbook that is just like version 16 except there’s an additional page listing additional credits to the same authors of the previous 16 versions.

like

The real issue is that tuition keeps skyrocketing. College administrative staff contribute little to no real value and are exploding in numbers, driving up tuition. Or rather the admin staff soak up all the available money from free and easy student loans like a sponge.

Tbh I’m convinced that the answer isn’t “more college for everyone and make it free-er etc.”. An ideal centrally-planned society would have fewer people enrolling in university than we have today. It’s not like the schools are meaningfully providing the “liberal education” ideal, they’re largely not even useful technical schools, just meaningless credential printers. The proper policy would be for the government to only give out so many loans for each field as well as scholarships. Give out a bunch of engineering scholarships and loans, but only a few loans for history and language and the like. Maybe it’s a lottery system, maybe it’s an exam, who cares. I’ve seen the proposal to make these fields operate on a similar principle to NYC taxi medallions. There are only so many “historian medallions” and to be a professional historian you need one.

I’m ranting, anyway, but the right answer to tuition inflation is to end the flow of easy money to schools.

like

I agree or at least make it as close 0% as possible. Student loan rates are ridiculous.

And limit to undergraduate degrees from non-profit schools (no predatory graduate degrees, no for-profit schools)

In ELSS mutual the total we can save save tax is 1.5lakh. Do we need to invest yearly 1.5 lakh yearly to save tax? I am planning to have a Sip of 5000 monthly for 3 years. So total money invested in 3 years will be around 60000 * 3 = 180000.
Will that be sufficient to save tax or Do I need to have a sip of 12000 per month to save tax.
