I am Indian too. And lets be real. We are more racist than anyone. We want all our gore neighbors to like us but the moment our desi kid makes a black friend, we want him to stop hanging with that kid. The moment we start seeing Mexican or black kids in our kids’ school, we want to move. As long as our Indian kid is dating a gori or gora, we are fine but if it is other race then we have a family crisis.
And don’t get me started on our ignorant intolerance for gays and lesbians.
So cool it on racism. All people are doing is calling out abuse of the visa.
You and I know that our Indian consulting firms have been abusing H1 visa for decades. In fact to a point where it is used as a mean for modern day white collar abuse by paying low wages, no promotions, and threats to send them back if they don’t work long hours.
Abuse is getting addressed. Thats it.
If you want an AI engineer then bring them, they are getting paid a ton here, so you pay 100k fee and it is worth it. But don’t bring a QA tester, that is cheap labor loophole. Give that job to a college graduate from US.

I work in FS/banking in the U.S. Literally , most of the new hires in Tech and Ops and other areas are all indians (AI); I'm not sure where they come from in the last few years, and it is getting out of the hands. If you are in the corp setting, it is fairly obvious, and you can not miss the trend. They hire and promote their own, crowding out the candidates and college graduates who are left out in cold and arguably just as qualified. Some companies are clearly abusing the H1-B program; it is a known fact, and changes are needed.

Paying tax and believing in karma does not give you the right to occupy the greatest country in the history of the world.
Not sure if you all are trying to be that real, but some people acted like they wanted a more honest answer so there you go.
This isn't the trump card the Left seems to think it is. It's just that being the greatest country on Earth isn't typically something that actually happens in the real world because you're the most ethical country in the world.
I also think the Left should ask themselves a little more whether they'd be ok with all of the consequences such as making half as much money if we didn't dominate and exploit other countries. If you'd actually vote for the things necessary. If you'd be ok with the risk of the US being invaded or millions of people including people you know here dying in a severe cyberattack. The Left's idea of ethics in the US is often a cozy dream based in a world that could be if enough people declared solidarity.
If you don't believe in the more realistic version of what the US losing our top dog spot look like, you probably don't have the beliefs you think you do.
Wrong take: The conversation needs to be framed about H1B visas and how the companies have gamed the system to push the local talent out. It is not about specific ethnicity or nationality. However, everyone knows which country benefited the most, so calling that out is not racist.
OP, please dont use the race card here. The order doesn't say charge $100k to only Indian nationals. It is anyone who is trying to obtain H1B. It could be white European, Chinese, or Middle Eastern. Stop playing the victim card. Anyone is free to work wherever their heart desires if you don't like USA the Canada, Australia, and other countries are open. Take your talent there or even back to India.

There's a great thread about caste in Silicon Valley on Hacker News a couple of years ago. One lower caste Indian tech worker said his upper caste Indian boss wouldn't allow him to touch production systems because "he was ill-fated". This was at a US company in 2023 not 1985 Bangalore.
Stop with this racism shyte. I have worked with enough Indians from the North who are extremely racists towards black and latinos. They definitely think they are better and kiss up to the white Americans. Your country still has a heavily embedded caste system.

Not racism against Indians, it's all H1B. They just happen to be the biggest number, especially in tech. And if you can't see the discrimination Indians use to hire other Indians you know no one in tech. If employers think they are worth and extra 100k a year, then great. But don't cry racism when people point out the reality of what is happening.
You think MBB is sponsoring so many H1B ( and no one is claiming all those are Indian) because there are no qualified US/ greencard holders? Some element of diversity for clients, but mostly to support the programs cash cow of foreign students. The top programs don't strive for 50 percent foreign for a diverse class, they can get that racial diversity other ways and cultural diversity from 1st generation immigrants. It's all about the money. It's not about race. Stop trying to shame people by calling them names.,

It isn't racism to point out the blatant abuse of a system that exploits many Indians as much as it depresses American employment and wages. Maybe you should ask yourself why so many highly educated people, half of them Democrats who hate Trump, are cheering this move as well.
Democrats have a warped view of immigration. And this is from someone who voted for them in the last few elections. This needs to change.
My spouse and I were talking about this last night. One of our close family members works in nuclear engineering and hires so many people from India because we literally do not have enough experts in the field here. It’s like people think anyone and everyone can get an H1b if they ask regardless of the job.

I’m not sure it is racism to demand that a visa system is for workers that aren’t available here instead of being used for cheap labor.
What this will do is make outsourcing even more prevalent. Our company has been outsourcing instead of bringing in H1B workers for a few years already.
What is really the problem with the H1B program is that it is essentially an indentured servant system. The workers gets a decent wage, but usually they are working though a vendor that holds their visa and can’t go work for anyone they want and have to work some crazy hours.
That reliance will kill the middleman and force them to shut shop . Either your firm will be forced to Hire locally or Do without it . To add an average $/hour rate OF $49 to cover the cost ( $100k/2040 hours) is not going to make the economic pricing model viable at all for any consulting company.
I have not heard or read anything racist, can you provide examples? The program has been abused for years and I do work with extremely talented Indian people on H1B but I have seen also unqualified individuals as well

No one is paying 100k for a 100k employee. It’s only going to work for senior roles in tech (essentially principal engineers)
But don’t u get it? Indians are such elite human Capital we should pay 200k just to be lucky to have even 1 work in our country

The annual, legislative H1B cap of 85,000 was abandoned in 2014. A careful consideration will highlight the economic and social considerations demonstrated on the attached graph.
Additionally, the approved H1B visa applications account for roughly 40% (per 2023-2024 numbers) issued of the seven other visa types. The annual compounding numbers of NEW, approved visa applications dwarfs the oft repeated 85,000 number.
STEM-OPT visa holders (esp. favored by employers for student workers because FICA tax is exempt for the duration of their academic program + six months after) routinely parlay their visa to an E2 visa to extend their stay by starting treaty-country businesses. Interestingly, OPT was never codified in law but rather a handshake deal between a legislator and one person at the DoD in the mid-2000s. There is no cap on OPT. In 2024, there were 194,554 authorizations.
It’s also worth noting the flawed rhetoric fusing H1B visa holder with “legal immigrant” status. Visa holders often mistake nonimmigrant (e.g., H1B, J1, O1) for legal immigrate status, conflating temporary work/study authorization with permanent residency. They’re not the same no matter how many times you extend your visa and are lulled into a feeling of indefinite foreverness. Legal immigrate status is achieved with a green card.
