There are very few good books on consulting and IT services that I have seen . What should such a book cover for it to be useful to a large number of consultants ? Specific topics like how to grow a career , how to develop business etc OR a general purpose overview from all angles ?

There are very few good business books altogether. The entire genre is replete with crap. Even the few good books that exist (eg, Minto’s Pyramid Principle) need to be practiced rather than read. Or you can get the gist by reading a two-page summary of the book.

If you want to be a great consultant, read widely outside the garbage business genre. Be interesting. Develop the ability to think in different ways by getting exposed to different kinds of stuff.

Read whatever interests you. For me, it’s mainly hard science fiction; satire; philosophy, and the occasional classic lit. Sometimes some mathematically heavy things too. No right or wrong to the choices - just stuff I like and find thought-provoking.

I found Cal Newport’s “So Good They Can’t Ignore You” helpful and relevant to consultants, since it deals with ‘career capital’ which is what we peddle in.

Looking to get advice on two different job offers. I am only concerned about long term career prospects in choosing one or the other. Offer 1: warehouse manager for a beverage company. Does anyone have the 2020 SHRM books for sale or to borrow? My job won’t contribute towards my certification. I’ve already paid for my test. I have the books from 2015 but I’d like to study from the 2020. I tried finding them online to purchase but sellers of affordable books aren’t responding.

I'm seeking a transition from a high-growth Tech Scale-up to VC or PE. I'm armed with two years of Product Manager and, before that, 1 year in MBB; plus I've tackled extensive commercial due-diligence for targets anywhere from $50M - $500M - any idea to make this ambition a reality? Grateful for all advice.
