Don’t tell them until you are close to returning. You’ve earned the maternity leave pay.
I get short term disability
Agree! Have that baby. Love every minute of that maternity leave, then tell them. Happens all the time. Plans change. I think in another feed someone from HR commented saying that it’s 50/50 the employee will return. Your life is about to get so much bigger, don’t waste it at a place that treats you like shit.
I interviewed during my maternity leave (all of the companies knew I was on Mat Leave and were really amazing! Gave me pumping time in between interviews, etc) and got a new job. I did go back to my company for one week in order to resign in person and gave them another week so it would be an official two weeks notice. That way, I was able to say “bye” to friends and grab my personal items from the office. Zero issues regarding owing them any leave money, etc back. Of course they were shocked, but I already accepted the new job.
Think of it this way - people quit ALL the time. Just because you just had a baby doesn’t mean you are required to give any additional time/loyalty/etc to your resignation.
Thank u! Very helpful
I don’t have personal experience doing this but if you are being treated horribly, you should definitely do it.
There’s two ladies at my work right now that are pregnant in the same situation, it’s a total boys club. All the guys get the fun projects and the woman get all the projects that no one wants to touch. I don’t think they will wake up until the good people starting leaving.
Use the mat leave to interview and then negotiate a later starting date. Read your paperwork carefully though because some agencies have a clawback period where you have to pay for part of your leave if you don’t stay after X amount of time.
Just went through this. Feel free to message me if you want to chat.
This happened to me but bc I actually found a new job (wasn't looking, just happened), I gave notice 2 weeks before I was supposed to return - it went fine. I think it's pretty common for people to change jobs during maternity leave, at least more than we think. The law protects you, so your company really cannot do too much.
Just be prepared for it to be tough to hunt while you have a newborn, especially if you're going to have to do intense assignments and things on little sleep. But still, it's better than returning to a job you hate.
Thank u!
Definitely do not tell them until you are approaching the end of your leave.
I’m in the same position, actively interviewing while on may leave and have no intentions of returning. Appreciate any insight! I’m a little worried I’ll owe the company though- how can I find out if I need to return to work for a certain amount of time, so as not to owe anything?
It’s says in my paperwork
