Those who are first/second years with <80k income - how much do you usually save per month (after tax and non 401k). Curious to see if I'm the only one that is super shitty saving money here.

Probably a room in a house, I save $0 a month between rent/student loans /eating

How tf at you guys doing this. I save like $500 a month. Maaaaybe $1k if I was being frugal. Anyone else with me?

4.1k a month after taxes on a 70k salary. So that's $1100/month already. You should try to save an additional $900/month and you'll be at $2k/month. Car insurance - switch to metromile if you travel since they only charge insurance per mile you drive. Look into a spot that's little farther and cheaper that has free parking. If you travel 4 days a week you don't need to spend so much money on rent AND parking. Spotify you can get $15/month family plan. Find 5 friends and split it $2.5/month. Netflix you can also split. Hair cuts go to a hood I barber . I pay $20 incl tip for beard and cut twice a month and look fresh af. I budget $600/month for food and going out. Shouldn't be spending so much on food if you travel Whatever I save goes into vacation fund. I cook most meals at home. When I go to restaurants with friends don't order too much food. Instead of going restaurant incite ppl over to your apartment split groceries and cook food and get drunk. Never order alcohol at dinner. I pre-game bars so limit spending at bars. Gym can be $30/month. 600 going out/food + 100 insurance + 40 hair cut + 30 gym + 50 phone + 20 Spotify/Netflix etc + 40 internet = $880/month. Find a spot to rent that's $1100/month incl parking and utilities. That's $2k/month in expenses. $2100 in savings.

I save about 3500 a month at 80k income. Max 401k, max ESPP, max IRAs, plus an extra 500 or so per paycheck roughly

When I was making that much I didn't save at all but I have an expensive boyfriend.

I save $500 or so. I'm in the NYC area.

Wow I feel bad now. NYC, 72k, save about 1.5-2k/month depending on what I do during the month

These types of threads tell me a lot of people spend money like there's no tomorrow just because they have it.

$1,600 rent, $650ish on food, car insurance, monthly parking, haircut, monthly gym, Spotify/Netflix, phone,Internet, utilities. That's easily close to $3k if you include a few hundred for entertainment/going out

About 1600

God where do you live D1?

Like $1000-$1500 a month

Wtf... How much do you pay in rent/where are you based? A1

When I lived in dc area I managed to save about 25-30k on a 70k salary. I moved home and now save about 45-50k on a 85k salary. Talking about per year obviously.

I pay $900 rent in DC. Location not a priority for me 💪

^where do you pay 900 in DC?!

D3 same boat as you :,)

Thoughts please.

28 years old and currently a 4th year in big law

- 79k in loans (3.25% rate with First Republic)
- 50k liquid (HYSA)
- 140k investments (includes 401k, HSA and brokerage account)

Should I nuke my loans, continue saving by growing my nest egg and investments or a hybrid of both.

FWIW, been living with parents for about 3 months due to Covid so rent isn’t a factor (extra 2.5k disposable/month which I’ve been using to boost my savings).

Thanks everyone

Where should I be saving my money for a down payment? 23 years old right now saving ~30K a year (can’t really save more I live a frugal lifestyle). When I say where i mean what investment vehicle. Right now I’m taking full advantage of tax accounts but should I be putting it in other accounts knowing I will need it in 6-7 years for a down payment ? Hi all! New investor here, and starting full time this summer (advisory, 75k). No student loans. Trying to figure out the tax savings accounts to open. Here's what I've gathered to open (in order):

1. Roth 401k and max out ONLY to what the company is willing to match (Free $)
2. HSA (via a high deductible insurance plan plus max out the HSA since I can consider it a secondary retirement account to invest in it)
3. Roth IRA (max this out too and invest)

Any comments/feedbacks/tips appreciated!

I have around $8000 in my HSA account sitting in cash🤦‍♂️ Will appreciate any recommendation from the group. For context I’m 39 and have a family with one kid. Medical costs are minimum in the family so, don’t really need this cash near-term. Investing in target fund is an option but, my 401k and IRAs are also invested there so, wondering if I need to diversify any?

First gen grad working in Corp America so had to learn stuff like investing from scratch. I deposited funds in my IRA and invested those in some stocks. This was early in my learning journey. I've since learned about Roth IRAs and their tax benefits and would love to convert but I own some stocks that I bought relatively cheap and would hate to sell. Any way for me to convert to Roth while holding my stocks?
